English Speaking Year 2012 kicks off

BANGKOK, 4 January 2012 (NNT) - Under the project ‘English Speaking Year 2012’ by the Education Ministry, teachers and students across the country have begun speaking English in school.

Students, teachers, and officials at schools as well as government offices under the jurisdiction of the Education Ministry have started speaking English at least one day a week as part of the project.

The program is set to prepare Thai people for the ASEAN Community in 2015, in which the citizens of the ten ASEAN nations would be more connected. English will be the major language to be spoken among ASEAN peoples.

Under the English Speaking Year 2012 project, participating individuals will speak English every Monday. However, due to the extended New Year holidays, the English speaking day this week has moved to Wednesday January 4th.

Educational institutions are encouraged to utilize several English teaching materials, including movies, radio, and television shows to boost student's motivations. Language institutes, such as British Council and AUA, as well as international schools will also send their instructors to teach English in public schools, to improve the students' language skills.
