But, don't get caught! That could result in some time in the Crowbar Hotel.

My friend took his friend who had 3.5 years overstay out from Phuket airport. there was no trouble at all, he simply paid the 20,000 baht fine and the immigration guy even had a laugh and a joke. He flew to Penang where the next day he applied for and got a free tourist visa and returned to Thailand the next day, Again no trouble. It doesn't cost that much to stay legal though and as said is fine if you are paying when leaving but if you get stopped before you will spend some time in an immigration detention centre which are not very nice.

This is the correct forum - if you click on it you are taken there (here).

To the Op, the maximum fine is 20,000 as many have stated, but get caught then there is time in the IDC (Immigration Detention Centre), until you have the funds for a ticket home, not to a neighbouring country. Plus the taxi fare from IDC to the Airport of around 500baht, now the fine is increasing, so best to sort it out very very quickly and quietly.
