What Happened To Mokador Coffee

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what happened to Mokador Coffee opposite Wat Pra Singh ? It was a very nice establishment and I already had nine stamps on my coffee club card with only one more coffee to go until I got a free one! laugh.png

But now it's all closed down and t even the signs have been taken down. They used to host the expats club sometimes.

But seriously and it was run by a very nice American couple and I just wondered what had happened to them or whether they had located to a different spot?

It's closed down. There is a new Mokador coffee franchise located in or next to the new Duke's but it's owned by different people and has no connection to the now closed cafe.

that is sad! What happened did they over capitalise on the fit out of the premises? it was very nice but it must have cost them an arm and a leg?

And I have to say when I went there for coffee there were never other customers sitting with me?

Yes, it's a mystery. Fancy place, no customers. Who in his right mind wouldn't want to run a business taking a loss I wonder.

I love coffee.

The Thai coffee shop I use has outside seating area, free wi-fi, and a cold latte or mocha costs 30bht.

In the same road is another Thai coffee shop with air-con, sofas, free wifi, and a cold latte or mocha is 40bht.

I can name many more around the same price range.

Why would anyone use these expensive places?

That place was not of CM, really. Felt like an int'l airport or shopping mall. But it did have an ambiance. It might have made it on Nimmanhaemin, but that's about it. Way too pricey and dressed up for here. The brand has shops worldwide and is of a certain standard, but in this quaint country town, depsite modern acceleration, it's hard to choose "Italian" beans from Columbia and Africa for an arm and a leg when we have world class beans and roasts coming out of the local hills, all for a good deal less.

It may work in the new location. The Farang guy and his partner who took it over from the couple may still be running it, not sure. I found them to be friendly enough. The rest of their staff too. Best of luck to them.

I tried it once and IMO the food was OK, but not worth the prices they were charging. I do have to admit that the coffee was really excellent and I usually hardly notice the quality of coffee as long as it is OK - I just do not get the coffee-snob thing.

I couldn't tell the difference between wild cevat and birdy canned coffee, i don't get it either.

All i know is that it makes me take a dump.

Because it hasn't quite sunk in that they are now in Thailand?

Thank you..................

Good one.

I guess I'm in the coffee snob camp.laugh.png Seriously I'm an addict and I love good coffee which is one thing I really miss about living in Europe. Most Thai coffee shops serve coffee that is not very good which explains why there are so many Thais standing in queue and willing to pay double for a good cup of coffee at the better places. I've tried to go to to that newish place on Nimmanheiman near Soi 1 that has won all the awards and that another member recommended (can't recall the name) but either there is no place to park or the queue for a cup of coffee is just too long and I get impatient.

I hear alot of buzz about Akha Ama Coffee which is around Santhitam or Chang Peuak, not sure as haven't been. But I do have a bunch of friends raving about it on FB and they've even been out to the guy's coffee farm recently. I'm sure I'll be by to give it a try soon.

Have also seen a couple of my coffee snob friends outside the Nimm one, but can't recall the name either. I'm sure someone will enlighten us shortly.

re ... But now it's all closed down and t even the signs have been taken down.

not all of them : )

for a start they only employed executive coffee sales people .. an executive coffee girl ?

and then they had to pay an armed response police team

to keep the heavy coffee drinkers ( u g not included ) in check !

its no wonder they shut down : (

dave2 : )

ps .. the armed police sign was still there on wednesday

Don't know if you noticed it but you have not even named one place yet.coffee1.gif

Apparently a good deal of their business comes/came from corporate deals with hotels. Makes sense in that the properties could brag they serve an internationally recognized fine coffee. But in the same sense that 'boutique' is in (whether it's overdone and/or sometimes shoddy is another topic) I would expect even the 5 star properties to be touting local coffees who have achieved a good product and consistency - the choices are many.

I see it doing much better in BKK.... but who knows. Some people will always dream the dream (.... and maybe break the bank trying).

Mokador wasn't very good coffee IMO - certainly nothing special. They had an amazing Apple Streusel cake. I think what killed it was the location.

Coffee in Thailand continues to evolve at a rapid pace. It went from Nescafe everywhere 10 years ago to huge modern espresso machines everywhere 4 or 5 years ago to gourmet single origin coffee beans, barista competitions and micro roasters now. The pace of change is crazy. I love it.

The place is actually between Soi 2 and 3 and now that the HORDES of Bangkokians have gone there is no line anymore. My father in law was in CM from Bangkok over the holidays and he asked us about this place - and if he of all people knows about this it pretty much means half of Bangkok knows about it. It made the "must visit" list, maybe it was in a TV show or magazine or something. Anyway it's back to normal now.

I also love Pacamera downtown on Ratchadamnoen; Impresso in Nimman 13 next to La Casa Tapas; and now 9th street Cafe on Nimman Soi 9. But, if you're happy with your local 30 baht coffee... don't go to any of these places ;)

I had the Apple Sreusel and was not impressed. I wish that I had tried the cheesecake - as I heard some good things about it,- but never did.

I love the smell of coffee brewing, but I always find the actual product disappointing.

I guess coffee is pretty much the same as wine when it comes to being a connoisseur .....all I know if it's got a good alcohol content and doesn't taste like vinegar, then it's OK. biggrin.png

I'll second Akha Ama, great coffee, friendly owner and not expensive either, though the location is a little strange.

Hassadhisawee Soi 3. Hassadhisawee is the road that leads north from the Huay Kaew Rd corner of the moat. Soi 3 is about 1km along it coming from the moat, go over the traffic lights (about 800M) and it's the second soi on the left. Akha Ama is almost at the end on the right at the rear entrance to a Thai style condo.

The one on Nimmanhemin sounds like "Ristr8to Coffee"

Unfortunately most coffee shops go out of business when they finally start to realize Starbucks is selling location and not coffee.

I'm with you on both things. I enjoy coffee (with cream and sugar), but not in a big way.

I agree with Christopher Hitchens on a few other things are not that big a deal to me..

Thai 1 On on Soi 9 and The Dixie Pig on Soi 2 both serve excellent coffee in Chiang Mai, Dixie Pig for 30 B, Thai 1 on for 40B. Organic Arabica from Chiang Dao both bought at the roaster, which is next to Eagle House II down the leafy soi near the UN Irish Pub. I enjoy hanging out and watching the roasting--dang, that smells terrific. The roaster also sells coffe by the cup, but it's more of a Thai hangout. Thai 1 on has a pool table and sports on TV. Dixie Pig is smaller, not ppool table, no TV. Both have a full breakfast menu

If you really want ambiance and good coffee, make the effort to visit this coffee shop, out at Mae Rim.

Sala Cafepost-137729-0-66405300-1325905661_thumb.

The Sala Cafe, mountain views and good coffee, slightly expensive at 55bht for a cold one, full of rich Thais from BK.

It's actually worth the higher price and lunch is only 50bht.

I've been here. Sometimes I think my Thai friends actually obsess more about coffee and cake than the farangs do. rolleyes.gif
