I suppoase they have to do more work also checking etc after all cant just let anyone into our country....dont know where you are but in australia as all places the same.

The real cost of processing a UK settlement visa is given as £391 in 2011, yet the cost is £810. Why? Because they can charge what they like. Complain if you like, they don't care.

The only people who could answer that question most probably wouldn't want to. One can only speculate.

One possible reason is as a filter ... it might be seen as a way to shake out the people who are not in sincere relationships and/or are unlikely to be sufficiently financial to sponsor someone who potentially has little in the way of their own assets. It might also be an issue of cross-subsidisation .... charge more than it costs for this in order to pay for 'services' for which the gov't cannot charge a fee .... e.g. embassy cocktail parties, accommodating illegals, etc. wink.png
