Australia issues US$560 million grant for health and water needs in Indonesia

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- The government of Australia has issued a 5 trillion Rupiah (U.S.$555 million) grant to Indonesia to assist regions in need of health facilities and clean water, officials said on Saturday.

Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) program chief Perarca Karetji told the Jakarta Post that the grant, which was specified in a mutual agreement between the two countries, will focus on reducing maternal and child mortality rates, although other programs will also benefit from the grant.

According to AusAID, an Indonesian woman is 30 times more likely to die in childbirth than an Australian woman and one in three children under the age of five suffer from stunting, which is caused by malnutrition. In addition, approximately 120 million Indonesians do not have access to safe drinking water while about 110 million people do not have adequate sanitation.

With more than 12 percent of Indonesians living below the national poverty line, the agency's bilateral funding programs also focus on improving health and education; boosting economic growth through infrastructure development and improved economic management; providing support to protect the poor and vulnerable from shocks; and democracy, justice and good governance.

The funds will be managed by the Australia Indonesia Partnership for Maternal and Neonatal Health (AIPMNH), the National Program for Community Empowerment (PNPM Mandiri), HIV/AIDS programs and other organizations.

Geez I wish they would spend that sort of money on the Australian Health System. People laying on trolleys and floors for days in emergency wards and waiting lists extending years to get into hospital and the Australian government is providing a health system to indoneasia that Australians could only dream of. I can now see why Australians are travelling to places like Indonesia and Thailand to see a doctor, that is where all thier taxes are building the best hospitals.

+2 totally disgusting by the Australian Government, you have elderly Australian citizens dying because they are on waiting list for years for medical treatment becauser there is a lack of medical services in Australia and the government is spending tax payers money on caring for another countries citizens when it's own are dying and being totally neglected.

I doubt that Australian tourists travel to Indonesia and line up for conditions like this.

Helping Indonesia to improve the living conditions for the people there might also help to keep the people there instead of that they become a part of the 21 century wave of immigrants who seek a better life in Australia. I heard that the older generation of Immigrants from previously migrant waves to Australia aren't so happy about newcomers.

The hospital in Bali was built and paid for by Australia which also contributes to its running as too many Australian holiday makers were getting injured and it was costing too much to fix the mistakes and infections on their return to australia
