My wife is Thai, we normally live in Australia where she has permenent residency. 13 months ago, our daughter was born in Australia. She inherited Australian citizenship by birth, and has an Australian passport.

We are currently in Thailand - can anyone clarify what we need to do it? I'd imagine that since the birth certificate is in english, it'll need to be translated and certified ... does anyone the high-level process? I see a frustrating day of beauracracy in my future unless I know in advance what I'll need.

unless you also have the Thai birth certificate and the child's Thai passport and only there for a holiday, I wouldn't bother.

Though she is an Australian AND Thai citizen, the Thai citizenship first needs to be established.

Given your child was born in Australia, only the Thai embassy in Canberra can issue her with a Thai birth certificate (in Thai of course). No adminstrative body in Thailand has the juristiction to do this.

Ideally, you child should also apply for a Thai passport at the same time (if you are near Canberra) or via one of the consulates in your states capital city.

Entering Thailand on the Thai passport, you take the Canberra issued Thai birth certificate plus the Thai passport.

The Ampur will ask for the Thai BC plus will need to see the Thai passport. The first is to prove the Thai citizenship, the second is the show that your child has only recently entered Thailand, and thus exempting her from the fine when a child isn't registered on the Tabieen Baan in the 15 days following birth.

If you have those papers, getting on the house register should actually be a sinch.

IF you are living in Thailand now, then you need to head to consular department in Chaeng Wattana, there they have an desk which will liase with the Thai embassy in Canberra to issue you and send you the Thai birth certificate for overseas born Thai children.

It depends on how long you will be staying in Thailand. As Samran said, you can apply for teh birth certificate through the Thai Foreign Ministry, Consular department. They also issue Thai Passports. But it will take some time.

No rush to do this stuff really until you decide to move to Thailand on a more permanent basis.

The BC can be done by mail, so no need to go to Canberra unless you happen to live in Queanbeyan anyway or have an urgent need for porn and fireworks .

The passport can be organised at the consulate in the states capital. Given the passport requires specialised equipment, they are usually done at the consulate only when the Canberra embassy people come to town for a week or two. You can email the consulate in advance to book a slot during their next visit, again, saving the trip to Canberra.
