Talkingthai App For Iphone - Very Good!

I have used this app almost on a daily basis for 3 months now and I have to say its really good. Yes, it was expensive but it is really worth it.

The number one reason is that every word in its dictionary can be played back in Thai with a very clear female voice. I bet it is a synthetic voice, since it must have been a huge effort to sample all this, but it's also so human that it's difficult to tell.

Also every word is accompanied by the meaning or context which is also very helpful.

There is also a lot of preferences you can make on how you want the Thai to be shown in English, and you can chose from all the styles that you are familiar with from other learning tools you might have used before.

Of course you can translate both ways and also there a small icons placed beside the words so that you can see which is common, offensive, technical, old fashion, royal and so on.

The ability to break up words into smaller pieces to see the direct translation of those are also very interesting since it will make you understand more about how the language is built up.

There's also Thai keyboard support in-app so that you only have it when you need it.

Also there is a lot of reference into the writing and tonal rules of Thai and all words can be opened in a special writing guide mode that will explain many things around it.

There is a lot other things and I can sit for long time playing around in it.

All in all this is a app purchase that I really can say was worth every baht.

It's called TalkingThai in the app-store. I'm not sure about android support, but I really hope they have it there too.

Yeah, its absolutely fantastic. As you say, the ability break down words into their component parts is very clever and useful. I think it's a human voice rather than a synthetic one- especially as it has to get the tones right- it's quite amazing the amount of effort they've put into this. Definitely the best app out there for Thai language, incredibly in-depth and useful.

Apparently it's available for the Android as well- http://word-in-the-hand.com/thaidictandroid_ov.html

That was good to hear!

Regarding the voice I just can't imagine the work of digitizing all those word with such a consistent voice, and it should actually be more easy to make a speech synthesizer for a tone based language than a language like English. But I see it's 240+ megabytes so most of that must be for sound I guess.

Correct! So for all out there familiar with the books will find the same transliteration systems in the app too, together with many others that you may prefer.

wow, this really looks excellent on the website, seems to be a technically-mature product and not just the usual android-App-rubbish quickly thrown into the Android-market to cash in.

Costs 771 THB on the android market, but may be well worth the admittedly high price.

I rather pay a high price for a quality product than a few Cents for the usual android-market-rubbish.

have to sleep on it and will then report in case I purchased it......

I've also been using for last few months. So easy to use and love the 'find meaning inside words' feature. Also you can search by phoneme in English too which I find useful. Mixed with google translate app for crude sentence making, it's really helped me with my Thai. :)

The voice in the dictionary is that of Ajarn Benjarwan Becker, the author of the dictionary and of Thai for Beginners and many other works (paiboonpublishing, com). She made one recording for every dictionary entry.

Speaking as one who has used and then trashed many, many Thai/English books, dictionaries, etc. I must say that TalkingThai is by far the very best thing I've ever used. I got so frustrated trying to figure out how to properly pronounce a Thai word .... and it took way too much time ... and in the end, I was not at all sure I was pronouncing correctly. Actually hearing the Thai words pronounced correctly with TalkingThai is a blessing.

I'm presently using this app on an iPad but will soon have it on iPhone so that I can have TalkingThai with me at all times.

BTW, my Thai girlfriend and I have a lot of fun ... increase our communication ... and learn a lot of Thai/English together .... by playing with this app on my iPad.

galvheim, thanks for this recommendation. I purchased it for $25 and it's really worth the money. using it both on the ipad and iphone for one price.

I looked at this app last year however was put off by the price and no reviews. The $25 is definitely worth it though for this app.

I will rate it in the app store for other users to be more confident in purchasing it.

Cheers

An upgrade became available yesterday (free for existing users). It increased the vocabulary from 100,000 words to 150,000! and added some other new features. It's a nice improvement. I downloaded it to my iPad and iPhone and they both work well.

I certainly agree with all the reviewers. I've been studying Thai now for about 20 years and this is the very best dictionary I've worked with.

I was holding off buying it thinking they might let the content go stale but as long as they are expanding it I'll be willing to part with the cash.
