Suicide attack kills four police officers in southwestern Russia

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (BNO NEWS) -- Four police officers were killed in a suicide attack in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan on late Tuesday evening, local authorities said on Wednesday. Two others were injured.

The female suicide bomber detonated her explosives near a police station in Karabudakhkent, a village located in Russia's volatile republic of Dagestan. A source in the republic's police forces told the RIA Novosti news agency that the suicide bomber approached a police post while several officers were on duty and others were inside a vehicle nearby.

Sources said four law enforcement officers were killed in the powerful explosion, while two others were reported injured and rushed to a local hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Militants in the region continue to carry out attacks against security forces, police, and civilians, more than a decade after a separatist war ended in Chechnya. The volatile region of Dagestan neighbors Chechnya where about 50 percent of all militant attacks in Russia took place in 2010.

In late January, security forces clashed with militants in a Dagestan forest between Chernyayevka and Ukrainsky in the district of Kizlyar. Four Russian service members as well as five militants of the so-called Kizlyar group were killed. A dugout was found to contain food, equipment, weapons and bomb-making materials.
