Is Admission To The U.S. Patent And Trademark Office A Worthwhile Asset?

Recommended Posts

Planning on moving to Thailand. It's not a "career" thing; if the focus was the career I'd be better off staying in the States. Was debating about seeking admission to practice before the USPTO before I left. The USPTO has a separate bar exam aside from the state bar exams. In order to even sit for the exam you either need a B.S. in a hard science degree, or take the requisite number of hard science classes. I have about 1/3 to 1/2 of the classes already. I was debating whether it would be a good idea to take the remainder of the classes and sit for the patent bar examination. The plus side being I could practice before the USPTO in patent and trademark matters. I just don't know if there would be any demand in Thailand for anyone who is USPTO admitted.

Already have B.A. and J.D., licensed in 2 U.S. jurisdictions, have 10 years experience. Don't know if it is worth adding USPTO to the credentials.

Probably useless in Thailand unless you are working in-house for a company that files patents in the US. Not much work for US attorneys here unless you are working at getting visas for Thai girls to be with their US mates, and even that business is pretty crowded here and certain rules apply to practicing here. I'd still recommend it for your future endevours though as odds are you won't be remaining in Thailand indefinitely. Good luck.
