The Thai Visa Clique

Well, I came on here initially looking for answers to visa questions and fell right in. No lurking here as I soon met the Gent, Georgie-Porgie, tutsiwarrior, Chonabot etc and, at that time, this placed rocked! :D

Bet tamer now... :o

I've been around a while and also feel that TV is very cliqueish. There seems to be a core group of people who are "in" and the rest of us who will always be "out". But, society as a whole is no different. Some of us, like me, will always be out. Some of you will always be in. I'm pretty old now. And, although I've lead a fairly successful life, have never been able to figure out how to get "in". I'm just always "out".

That said, I think the moderators do a pretty good job of keeping thing on course and the idiots, who are even further out than I, at bay.

Of course, last time I complimented the mods in a thread I got slammed for it....

To the OP: You just have to understand that some of us will always be on the outside and will never figure out why. No matter how nice and friendly you try to be, you'll always be nothing but a reject. Get used to it.

Nothing diffficult about this read what you like to read post where you want and don't worry about the rest of it Cliques and flaming don't change the pay check any. If a topic intersting then you'll probably have something to say, if not find one that is.

Easy to say, hard to practice. When you feel like you'd like to belong, but you don't; hard to ignore the chatter of the in-crowd.

And, yes IM "really".

i see myself as a regular reader and poster, i rarely go 3 or 4 days without logging on to see what's up. but it baffles me how i have only made 280 posts in all, while some members can hit 500 in like 1 month.

overall i like the breadth of forums and topics covered under thaivisa, this is a credit to the administration. but i find that its really only a relatively small pool of hyper regular members who get their views across (remembering of course that there are really over 10,000 registered members).

there are occassional newbies but these people are often branded "troll" until proven innocent or otherwise worthy by the regulars. sometimes it is the luck of the draw for the newbies, if they are not too provocative or if there is some nice member around to encourage or defend him/her, the newbie may survive the experience and there is probably something like a 20% chance he/she will continue posting.

i liken the feeling to that of walking into a very small country western saloon, everyone stops talking and scrutinises you suspiciously. judging from the sheer breadth of topics open for discussion, i'm sure the unsuspecting visitor was instead expecting to be walking into a big city of ideas, like new york city, a place where anyone has a right to be there and an equal right to express him/herself freely without harrassment, subject to the usual laws of civility of course.

i sense however that it helps if the newbies are feminine/female, they generally get accepted more easily, sort of like the lonely damsel riding into town. all of a sudden the gents scramble to escort her across town, show her the sights, place her under his protection. but of course this is just my estimation and i do not have the data to back me up.

i don't think there are conscious cliques in operation but sometimes you only need to scroll down a topic to see the list of avatars replying to it to get a flavour of where the topic is heading.

sometimes i will not bother to respond to an ongoing topic because the usual suspects have already made a meal of it and i feel my point will not register in the right way.

i can understand if a forum is new and wants to grow a loyal readership, it serves the forum to reward those who post the most. but going past a point, having a system that rewards quantity over quality will only encourage a sort of mutually enforced myopia that may jeopardise the longer term dynamism of the forum.

I was flamed and had the troll label when I first joined but I think that it is some type of testing to see if you can handle the hot water :o

And Buadhai I have always thought you to be a great poster. You may not feel "in" but I would say you are :D

I had the same thing is the topic starter (I agree with you too). I asked an innocent question about studying in Thailand and I was dealt like some dumb person. I was being laughed at, posts were full of sarcasm and just making fun of me cause I wont make it anyway in Thailand. It annoyed me the most when people start telling me what to do and what not to do in Thailand. How would you feel if some russian or mexican told you never to come to your home country the UK ever again. Not nice right?

I would expect that thailand would do good to their attitudes. But its the exact opposite. I came with a certain stereotype about foreigners hoping it would change. But it was all confirmed. I'm going to be honest here I still dont like most posters on thaivisa. But its still the #1 english site to keep me in touch with the situation in thailand, information and still some entertainment
