webfact
Thai PM targets tourism revenue to reach Bt2 trillion in 5 years BANGKOK, March 30 - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Thursday that Thailand is one of the best tourism destinations in the world and that her government has targeted generating tourism industry revenues at two trillion baht within the next five years. Ms Yingluck said she is proud to tell the world that Thailand is a top worldclass tourism destination. Despite the country suffering one of the worst floods in history, the tourism business has recovered quickly and could generate an annual income of Bt700 billion. The government has targeted achieving tourism revenue of two trillion baht within the next five years, she said, adding that the target is realistic but needs cooperation from all parties concerned to promote the industry as sustainable major revenue for the Thai people and the country. Ms Yingluck on Thursday presided at the launch of the new tourism promotion campaign, "Miracle Year of Amazing Thailand 2012" at Muang Thong Thani’s Impact Arena. The exhibition to promote the year long tourism campaign focuses on the tradition, culture and unique aspects of Thailand and ‘Thainess’. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism and Sports Chumpol Silapa-archa said the "Miracle Year of Amazing Thailand 2012" is aimed at promoting domestic travel and at the same time, encouraging the international tourists to visit the kingdom. The varied tourism events will also commemorate three special royal occasions including His Majesty the King's 84th Birthday, Her Majesty the Queen's 80th Birthday, and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn's 60th Birthday, he said. He added that the "Miracle Year of Amazing Thailand 2012" combines and draws on the previous tourism campaigns, Unseen Thailand and Amazing Thailand. The tourism promotional activities will be implemented on a monthly basis to back the campaign. Mr Chumpol said. webfact
Miracle Year of Amazing Thailand 2012 officially launched BANGKOK, 30 March 2012 (NNT) – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has chaired the official launch of a new tourism promotion campaign, which focuses on a number of unique attributes of Thailand. PM Yingluck Shinawatra, along with Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Chumpol Silapa-archa, on Thursday, chaired the official launch of the new project, called “ Miracle Year of Amazing Thailand 2012”. The event was joined by senior executives from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and members of the diplomatic corps. The PM stated that the latest tourism promotion project is aimed at showcasing Thailand's positive image and boosting confidence among international travelers through a number of unique attributes across the country. Under this project, the government and all related agencies will promote the country's cultural tourism and community-based tourism, both of which are considered outstanding strengths of Thailand. In addition, the prime minister said that the government will invest more in the development of basic infrastructure to facilitate travelers to the many attractive destinations throughout the country. Deputy Prime Minister Chumpol added that rigorous tourism promotional activities will be implemented on a monthly basis to back the project. He also conceded that calls from the private sector for a new theme park, resembling Disneyland, are a far-off ambition because the idea is very new to the country. -- NNT 2012-03-
laurentbkk
so the government is looking the tourists as just MONEY and REVENUE ? well dear PM , before that you need a good clean up in the infrastructures , get rid of all jet ski scams, brothel, gogo bar , massage parlor , corruption at every level , dangerous roads, long queues at immigration etc .. then maybe you can start to think as Thailand as a major tourism destination. Yes Thailand has everything , great beaches , nice food but what about the rest ? Dont think Thailand is like the french riviera or costa del sol in Spain .. It has many good points but also too many bad ...good luck anyway .... as for sure a miracle is needed ....
CalgaryII
Having been a Senior official in a national Tourism Authority in a previous life, this initiative is very much along the lines of marketing strategies followed by such organizations. If one scrutinized Marketing plans and strategies of other PATA members, one would see the similarity in operational mode. It really has very little to do with Politics, and everything to do with the normal Economic Development that all nations-states engage in. Probably paid "an arm and a leg" to some marketing consulting firm to come up with the themes and advertising mode for this tourism promotional campaign. Hopefully it was done in a competitive environment. Edited March 30, 2012 by CalgaryII
DP25
Yeah, good luck with that. 2 trillion baht is 65 billion dollars, near what France makes from tourism every year and they have 80 million tourists per year, 4 times the amount Thailand has. But I'm sure if Yingluck wants 2 trillion in revenue, then that is what TAT will report regardless of how ridiculous it is.

No.....Basic Infrastructure means Pavements with big holes in, and where there's no big holes there will be Tree's, Phone Boxes, Electrical Transformers, Litter and Dog Turds.
ratcatcher
Meanwhile, the sleeping tiger next door, commonly known as Burma or Myanmar, is slowly waking up. Over the next few years, given the freedom that has recently been seen, it will be a 'must see' destination for adventurous travellers who have already enjoyed the other neighboring countries. There are hundreds of unspoiled islands in the Mergui archipelago, good diving and plenty of forest/jungle cover. There are thousands of unexplored areas for the tourist, a society emerging from 50 years of total military domination to a semblance of freedom. It would be something like revisiting Thailand 40 or 50 years ago. Thailand needs to do more than brag about its well worn attractions such as temples, elephant camps and beaches. It needs a dedicated campaign of clean-up, including the beaches and all the well known scams and double pricing. If the Burmese can hire a savvy marketing company to put a package together offering something completely different from Thailand, it will leave this country in its dust. Perhaps then in a few years the T.A.T. can advertise a "New and Rejuvenated Thailand" instead of "The Same Old Amazing Thailand". IMHO of course.

folium
Triple tourism revenue in 5 years? Miracle Thailand, indeed. 5 years is probably a stretch, but if LOS becomes the Spanish Costas or Florida to Chinese tourists, they are the only real hope of tripling tourist spend in the near future. This will require far more air links, a high speed rail link and vast amounts of tourist infrastructure on the ground. Triple the revenue, rip the heart out of the goose that once laid golden eggs. hyperdimension
Triple tourism revenue in 5 years? Miracle Thailand, indeed. Maybe 2T baht is after accounting for inflation, which is set to rise due to the government's populist policies like the rice pledging scheme. So 2T baht may not actually be worth as much in real terms in 5 years.

And nothing has changed, in my view of 25 years travelling here And what happened to the recent Medias report of thailand being the prostitution capital of the word She must live in a dream world as most Thais do when it comes to pragmatism of business and the reality of their stupidity of the statements of the TAT ...who decided that they should build a disney world for Thailand. Simple message to Yingluck ( who actally does not give a hoot anyway) CLEAN up your double pricing and lack of service industry and maybe ...just maybe ...you might increase tourism. but the internet is a powerful weapon that is spreading worldwide to highlight your countries' scams and lack of accountability with regard to police investigations over Farang scams and suspicious deaths. I will leave out the Phuket syndrome...supposedly the only paradise place to visit according to Thai advertising of a tropical paradise. They forgot to add the fear factor of tuk tuk drivers and the number of farangs who are mugged or ripped off by unscrupulos self serving greedy Thai business people. But why should she care as one of the HI-So Thai chinese people in power receiving lucrative sums of money to continue her political career as a puppet for her brother. This is not about a sound bite butin reality.....some people are getting richer and richer ., despite their promises to the poorest of the Thai population
