Traders join police in fight against crime

BANGKOK: -- After the extended red-shirt protest in 2010, businesses in Bangkok's Ratchaprasong area have decided to link up their security cameras to the police closed-circuit TV network to protect themselves further and prevent crime in the area.

Police Maj General Anan Srihirun, deputy commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said yesterday that private businesses in the area had linked up some 1,300 of their security cameras to the police CCTV network. Many of these cameras are wireless and can be moved to cover a wider area.

"During the red-shirt protest in 2010, we connected the traders' security system directly to the command centre of the Metropolitan Police Bureau to monitor the area and exchange information about criminals entering the area to stop them from causing problems," Anan said.

Thanks to the new integrated security system, no serious crimes have been reported in the Ratchaprasong area over the past year. As an added measure, security guards are being trained to work hand in hand with the police.

Yea, it's because of the cameras that no crimes have been committed.

A not so subtle misleading article, isn't it?.......... Trying to deprive the anti-coup UDD/Red Shirt R'song protest of its' political context, suggesting instead it was a criminal one. Certainly will delight the heart of coupists everywhere, and reinforce media biases to Red Shirts.......... Attributing criminalization motives to one's political opposites, either singularly or as an entire Movement, is just more of the elitist arrogance......... One can obviously reverse that characterization to coup perps as well....... Not sure what that accomplishes...moving political stuff into the realm of criminal motives, for either side. Not a recipe for political co-habitation.

They'll just cover the cameras (or point them away) like last time in an attempt to prevent recording of evidence of their misdeeds.

They did a great job of beating a mentally ill man to death when he defaced the Erawan 'Shrine'.

Thailand would be far better of with out people like you. Always trying to drag the Coup into the argument even though Thaksin still controlled the government for two years with a lapse where he lost control but has regained it.

Then you deny that the red shirts armed peaceful demonstration was OK.

Keep your head where it is and you wil never know any thing.

When Thailand can except the fact that the red shirts were nothing more than terrorists and Thaksin was a crook they will have a chance at reconciliation. In the mean time keep denying the truth and see where it leads them.
