Facebook row makes teacher a Household name

BANGKOK: -- Authorities yesterday sought to allay concerns about the misuse of technology after a video clip of a schoolboy venting anger over being "blocked" from a group's Facebook page spread like wildfire on the Internet.

In the clip, the boy is heard threatening, "If you don't bring me back to the 1/9 group, Teacher Angkhana [sabangban] will definitely find out about this."

The boy posted the clip himself. His classmate posted another clip as a rejoinder, raising concerns that new technology could prove detrimental to children's relationships.

This concern is getting stronger especially since the government is about to hand out tablets to all firstgrade students.

Education Minister Suchart Tadathamrongvej, meanwhile, has suggested that teachers and parents keep a close eye on how children use these devices.

Chinnapat Bhumirat, secretarygeneral of Office of Basic Education Commission, has voiced confidence the tablets would become useful tools for learning and not be misused. "The use of the tablets will be under strict supervision of teachers," he explained.

Meanwhile, Angkhana, who teaches at Krathumbang Wises Samutkhun School, said she had already helped resolve the dispute.

"This quarrel has been going on since January, but now the students already understand each other," she said.

She explained that her name was mentioned in the first clip because she had always told her students to come to her every time they had a problem.

The widely circulated video clips have also spawned brand new phrase: "Teacher Angkhana will definitely find out about this".

Just shows there are good and well respected teachers in Thailand. Cyber bullying has become a problem in all countries. Good to see a teacher has the respect of her pupils.

This is the same education minister that legalised bribery in schools, right? Sure we can trust what he has to say. But really...

Not happening. That's like saying parents should take care of their kids at home and have them do their homework while teachers should actually care about what the kids do with a device in which they have next to no understanding of it's usage and features.

It is not he job of teachers to educate the basic profile of a children. The job of a teacher is to teach Thai, mathematic, history, geography etc... perhaps also a couple of words of English when they are "competent".

Basic education of a children is The parents AT HOME, but it seems they prefer to sleep and let their babies do what they want or force them to work sometime hard, which is the basic profile in Thailand.

Education is the key nothing else.

A tablet can be a much different tool from a computer.

Built in GPS, satnav, internet 3g/edge, wifi, bluetooth, much more portable and a much longer battery life.

We will have to wait and see the functionality of the government tablets, before commenting on their 'usefulness'.

Unlike Johnsuma, I think most children's interactions take place in school, and it is entirely appropriate and necessary for the schools to help develop and direct the children's social skills.

Oh, and good on the teacher.

The 'Free Tablet' is a political gimmick. It is a diversionary tactic.

What all children need, including in Thailand, is dedicated, motivated and highly qualified teachers. But, as in most countries, the politicians scramble aroung looking for a cheaper option. Except that this gimmick is no substitute for top quality teaching. Maybe this lady teacher is one of the few.

If they are in power long enough, these same politicians will come to recognise that the Tablet gimmick has not let them of the hook of financing quality education.

There is no greater benefit that any politician can do for the future well-being of their country than providing a well-resouced education system.

I would be happy if they forgot the "role model" and improved their teaching and became role models just by being good at their job instead of sending my kids home with stuff they don't understand meaning that I have to do half the teachers job. Other than teaching the class, what exactly is a "professional" teacher supposed to do to become a role model? Half my teachers were Oxbridge graduates, they weren't role models the vast majority of them were just dam_n good teachers.

People are assuming that schools have wireless internet access. Most don't. The better off ones do, but the kids have 3G capable smart phones . Which are dam_n site better than the tablets which are being ordered from China.
