Accident Tragic Fire in Ho Chi Minh City Claims Eight Lives

The blaze broke out around 10 p.m. in an apartment on the first floor of the Doc Lap building, located on Do Doc Long Street in Phu Tho Hoa Commune. Once known as Tan Phu District, the area was quickly thrown into chaos as neighbours attempted to douse the flames with portable extinguishers. Their efforts, however, proved ineffective as the fire rapidly intensified, engulfing the building’s facade. Emergency services, including multiple ambulances and fire trucks, swiftly descended upon the scene. Despite their rapid response, the Region 4 Emergency and Rescue Team confirmed that eight victims—six adults and two children—were found deceased on the first floor. The victims, from two families, included a married couple aged 38 and 40, and their children aged 7 and 11. Their bodies were later transported to the Binh Hung Hoa Mortuary. Firefighters battled to gain control over the inferno, finally succeeding around 1 a.m. Monday. Witnesses described a scene of horror, with Hau, a local resident, recounting the sound of multiple explosions amidst the flames. “After the fire was out, I saw police carrying out victims wrapped in blankets,” he said. The affected apartment housed a car and several motorbikes, all reduced to charred frames. The intense heat led to the collapse of the corrugated iron roof and warped the building's steel structures. The building is part of a decades-old residential complex comprising over 100 units, each measuring between 45 and 60 square metres. Situated along a narrow, 6-metre alley just 100 metres from Doc Lap Street, the complex has become a grim reminder of the potential dangers facing older residential areas. Authorities have maintained a cordon around the site, continuing their investigations into the cause of the fire and ensuring safety within the vicinity. The tragic incident has highlighted concerns regarding fire safety in outdated buildings across Ho Chi Minh City. As the community mourns the devastating loss, questions about the adequacy of emergency protocols and building safety standards are expected to arise, prompting a broader discussion about urban safety measures. In a nation where such tragedies have significant impact, this fire will likely prompt renewed scrutiny on residential safety and emergency response systems, not only in Ho Chi Minh City but across Vietnam.
