I have been experiencing network problems and slow speeds with my Maxnet Broadband connection, after some investigation and network tracing I have discovered the problem to be with 3 nodes within Thailand (Bangkok) here is the nework trace which I have sent to TT&T, you can see the problem with nodes 8 9 & 10 very clearly

It has to be said, MAXNET is f+++ing useless! Excuse the French. I did have pretty good speeds up until a few weeks ago, where it started dipping below dial-up speeds and eventually lower than 10 sometimes. Customer services are also pretty useless, with them saying I had a problem my end. BS, why would it give me perfect speeds in the small hours and then dip right down in the day? Very high contention ratios etc, but having less than 1% of the stated speed at times is a bit below the belt. Then again, what can customer services say when they know the company they're working for is crap, other than say, upgrade to our higher-grade packages? That's not going to happen. I'd hate to pay double what I am now and not have better guaranteed service.

You are wise not to upgrade, jackr. I pay 2350 baht for 512/256 (Maxnet4Life) which gives a theoretical download speed of 64 - however, I never see anything above 50, even within Thailand. Ever. Mostly around 10-20.

A ripoff I reckon, especially since they make themselves out to be so nice and 'give' you a router. In truth, the router (XAVi X8122r) is a lemon that no person in his right mind would buy when there are so much better ones out there.

Meadish,

I've been using maxnet4life for pretty much over half a year, and have no issues with it at all!

You are a bit wrong however to think your maximum speed would be 64kBps though.

the ip/tcp protocaol used by the internet has shitloads of overhead. Error correction, destination and originating ip adresses etc..

Even if the line is going full speed at 64kBps, you'll only have the practical use of maybe 55 kBps, the other 11 kBps is used up by that overhead.

Same reason why most test sites will clearly state that if you can reach 90% of your rated speed, you have an absolute perfect connection!!!

I download at between 45 and 52kBps, whatever the time of the day, or wherever from!

It is true however tha the Xavi router is a bit of a lemon, eventhough the big ones like BT are using it.

It's especially cheap :o

Now I learned to never use routers included with packages but to just buy one myself!

My Xavi works reasonably OK though, it only locks up every so often requiring a complete reboot (by taking out the powerplug!)

Been using tt&t & maxnet for a few months, no issues, so far. Touch wood.

The bottleneck to the US is a seperate issue.

the bottleneck is here - within thailand

No Problems here in Pattaya Maxnet4home package 512/256

hereforgood,

I subscribed to Maxnet home 512 a couple of weeks ago and had similar results in Pattaya for the first few days. Then it went very slow, and after complaining to customer services they reset something and it was back to around the speeds you have been getting.

A few days later it diminished again and CS said there was not much more they could do.

For the last 5 days at best it has been only around 78 kbps (9.5 KBps) download with 55 kbps (6.9 KBps) upload, and at the worst, less than my original dial up.

Not very happy, but guess I have to live with it.

Mike.

I have had this package for 5 months or so and have not had any drop in speed to speak of. I read here about TTT giving better speed for new customers and after 2/3 months cutting it back but that has yet to happen to me Knock on wood.

I must have spoken too soon.

Just did another speed test as things seemed much

faster after a forced reboot an hour ago.

Results were 387 kbps download and 167 kbps upload

using my normal A Beltronica test site.

If it stays like this I will be more than happy. :o

Cheers,

Mike.

I guess I would have bought that explanation, if I had not previously been on a connection here in Thailand for half the price, which DID deliver 100% of the connection speed. It was a cable modem connection though, not ADSL as the one I am using now.

I do suspect ADSL as such is a less reliable system of relaying data, as the cables are simply not as good quality as a cable network installed from scratch with brand new cables and switches, like the TRUE cable modem network in central Chiang Mai.

Either way, something happens with my present Maxnet4Life connection when I have too many in- and outgoing connections - I am not sure whether it is a router issue or a phone cable/ADSL filter issue - and testing the router theory requires buying a new one, in which case I am toast if substandard wiring or too long transport through shaky cables is the real culprit.... a good router is at least 3000 baht.

Hi guys

I subscribed to the maxnet4home 512/256 connection about 1 week ago and so far it has never risen above 300kbps and today its between 180 and 230 kbps. Should I be expecting more than this and if so, who should I call (local southern office or Bangkok head office) and what should she ask them to do exactly

Cheers

JAF

meadish,

Are your dsl-parameters OK?

From them you can easily check the quality of the phone lines.

In your Xavi router, click on the "WAN" tab, and then on the "DSL Param" button.

The screen should give you all info about the actual adsl connection to the telephone exchange.

Both local and remote attenuation should be under 60dB, under 50dB is even better.

Both local and remote SNR should be over 12 dB, over 20dB even better...

The attenuation indicates how much loss there is on the line, the SNR indicates how much noise is getting picked up, mainly due to bad connection and interference picked up from other adsl lines. Unfortunately the don't use twisted and shielded wires, so lots of noise badly influences your connection quality...

Another way is doing a local speed test.

on http://www.adslthailand.com/ click the "test speed" button and see what happens... This tests downloads from within Thailand, where there are almost no bandwidth bottlenecks, so a good indicator of what maximum speed your adsl line is capable of...

I'll attach screen shots of my adsl parameters and the local speed test.

You'll see my local speed is around 440kbps, which would indicate the maximum speed my line is capable of. International I mostly test about 5-10 % slower...

JAF,

do the speed test form adsl thailand (see link in post above).

You'll know immediately if your line is OK. You should have results of over 400kbps...

Internationally is a different story on Maxnet4home. The package is so cheap they have to have a very high contention ratio (sharing ratio) to make it brake even financially.

Remember that Maxnet has to pay around 12000 Baht/month (for 512kbps international bandwidth) to our monopolistic CAT.

Do the maths and you'll see a lot of people will be on the same 512kbps!

This seems to be hit and miss though, probably due to location and how many subscribers ther are in your neighbourhood. There are people reporting excellent speeds on Maxnet4home, and other hardly get above dial-up speed!

For us on the Maxnet4life package (we pay 3 times the price of Maxnet4home) the sharing should be a lot less, and we can expect more stable and higher speeds internationally.

meadish is correct in stating something is wrong, he should get much higher speeds...

Aha something else I have learned today. The speed I quoted was using the Speak Easy international test at 3-4pm today, so for international connections its okay for daytime use.

I checked out the ADSLThailand and I am getting 387kbps on the domestic adsl and 250-323 kbps on the international at 8pm so I must be one of the lucky ones.

Cheers Monty, I will keep checking it and btw, my wireless adaptor is working fine :D So next I am going to work on the security and connecting to the local filesharing hub :o

My download speed on max net is between 6kbps & 105 kbps. But that's me. IP Star didn't work for me.

Update on IPStar. They are going to take us to court if we do not pay the final bill (in full) for the service which we did not get.

Another update.

DTAC are demanding 5,480, for going over the limit on my unlimited internet account.

Monty,

I am confused I have the 4Home 512/256 package and take tests local from the site you mentioned

screenhunter44ja.jpg

And this site from Seattle

test61hv.gif

So are you saying I am getting what I should or am I getting better than I should expect with the home package ??

I do not know much about the speeds Ect other than they have been fast enough for me and for the 790 Baht a month a great deal so I thought.

Hi Monty,

Thanks for the very useful post - I just learned something new about both ADSL and my router software.

Please see attached screenshot for my ADSL parameters. According to your description they look ok, but my local SNR is not as good as yours, it seems (you 20, I 38 dB). Do you think this is where the problem lies? Any other ideas?

post-3636-1135746989_thumb.jpg

Speedtests are as follow. I got increasingly better speeds for each test I did at ADSLThailand. Attaching first and last test.

Here's the international speed test (Seattle, WA server):

post-3636-1135748043_thumb.jpg

Looking at hereforgood's results on the international speed test compared to mine, I have to say I am not very pleased with what I get for 2350 baht a month. Time to change ISP methinks.

Sorry Meadish,

had a couple of beer guzzling days :o

Your adsl line seems OK and so do your speeds, although a little bit slower then mine...

Locally over 400kbps is OK (for adsl anyway), and your international test at over 300kbps just seems to be a tad slow...

If that international speed is quite stable I certainly would not change ISP's.

Hereforgood's speeds are certainly out of whack. Not sure what happens there, but there was another member (kid) who had the same high speeds.

But these are the only ones I know of who get this consistently.

My speeds when I was still on the 790 Baht/month package were closer to what Lampard is getting, between 6 and 105 kbps. I normally get up very early (when I'm not in the beer guzzling mode anyway :D ) and then I got in the high 300's speed on the cheap package, so it's purely a high sharing ratio...After 8am it went down to 100 or even lower.

Peak hours I didn't even get dial-up speeds (40kbps) anymore...

So the 2350 (+7%vat) is certainly worth it for me, as long as speeds saty over 300kbps. I don't really download very much, and with normal surfing you wouldn't notice the difference between 350 and 250kbps anyway...

here are two network traces i produced, i use maxnet, the first was when i was having speed problems, i sent this trace to Maxnet support and also CAT II, never got a response from either but the seem to have corrected the problem, you will see clearly that nodes 7 8 & 9 (CAT II) within Thailand have a problem, the ping jumps from a normal 40ms to over 400ms, you can see this, look at Packet Data node 7-8

The second trace was done today to the adslthailand.com site and shows no problems.

Any time i have problems, the bottleneck has always been CAT Telecom Bangkok

for those who have noticed a drop in internet performance today, I have located another ping problem with CAT11 telecom and emailed them the details again, this seems to be a common accurance, are they doing it on purpose or is there a problem with their routers, I don't know but I wish they would do something about it, this high ping problem is internal to Thailand and internal to the CAT11 Telecom system in Bangkok.
