BigJohnnyBKK
It's not my homeland or culture so I aint buying squat! We appear to have been ruminating at the same time so in a nutshell, my 'old money' are your 'classy' and my 'wannabe' are your 'insecure'. And now back to the TV hoipolloi.... I inferred from your words that you believe that truly wealthy people have greater inherent value than those with less. Perhaps I misunderstood, in which case I apologize. BigJohnnyBKK
Once i saw a hi-so girl (not talking about magazines) I was walking near KSR, and i saw an Italian economy car from the sixties, transformed into convertible, painted with the most shocking pink panther pink colour..One girl at the wheel.. The girl was young and beautiful, dressed in black and wearing huge sunglasses, with her long black hair in the wind..She looked as cool as the car. Now, i'm not saying that you must drive a car like that to be hi-so, but for sure it helps. Hey that was **my** car! Now that I think about it I haven't seen Lek for a while. . . MediumPaceBowler
I think racial purity is important Very subtle! There's nothing subtle about revealing your ignorance. And there's nothing subtle about describing ignorance as subtlety. Allow me to put the two of you out of your misery: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_Chinese Read it. The current Royal Family (the Chakri Dynasty) is part Chinese. The predecessor of the dynasty's founder, King Taksin, was the son of Chinese immigrant. Racial purity is NOT important. This however does not imply that all Thai-Chinese are hi-so. But it does imply a very definite connection between the so-called "hi-so" and the Thai-Chinese. jayboy
A quick survey of this thread simply confirms my long held view that most members are clueless on the subject of class in Thailand presumably since their own social circles are rather limited to those who service expatriates. On this thread Samran is the exception, and his RBSC pointer is spot on.Actually Hiso has a definite "new rich" connotation and is quite different from the old Thai upper/ aristocratic class, though there is some overlap. Popular Post HardenedSoul
Why are you obsessed about so called Hi-So?? The troll using the MPB monicker believes - somewhat understandably - that any topic calling for discussion on aspirational topics such as "one's greatest achievement in Thailand" or "my exotic Thai-Chinese GF" will always inspire lively debate. He works on the assumption that most people - even those old enough to know better - see the grass as greener on the other side and that secretly, we all measure ourselves against those who appear to have it all especially those of us living in or very familiar with a country where even a modest amount of money can elevate one far above the overwhelming majority who are hopelessly poor. Personally, having spent a considerable amount of time around the UK's upper-middle classes in my embarrassingly impressionable early 20s (Gatecrasher Ball, Eddie Davenport, Jeremy Taylor - feel free to Google), I quickly realized that no matter how old the money and no matter how venerated the name attached to it, these people and their parents should not be considered role models for any lifeform more evolved than an amoeba. Whether or not the troll known as MPB actually does aspire to rise through the ranks of Thai society on the coat-tails of his exotic, Thai-Chinese, BMW Z4-driving, ex-Vogue cover model, Ph.D-qualified GF, is largely irrelevant. What is more worthy of contemplation is whether the collective willingness to respond to his threads knowing what a consummate tool he has shown himself to be in the past is inspired by his cleverness or our stupidity.

I remember the vogue for those Balls around that time ( in fact did they not go on well into the 90's?? ), a few people made a fortune out of them. I would have loved to have seen them. Set them up in Bangkok HS and you would make a fortune too. ps. On your primary point, 100% correct. Surely even the OP realizes by now that his brand is toxic. David48
I think racial purity is important Very subtle! There's nothing subtle about revealing your ignorance. And there's nothing subtle about describing ignorance as subtlety. <snip> MediumPacedBowler ... why the angst? StreetCowboy and I usually share the same thoughts generally when it comes to thoroughbreds. Nor are we individually or collectively ignorant. Some members have a penchant for the purebreds in life, some members however like the exotic combinations that comes with mixing the breeds. Some are old fashioned and romantic and like a traditional rose ... some like to try their hand at cross pollination and try and breed new and exotic species. For example, look what some breeders have done with the humble tomato. They have bred something which has a long shelf life, a rich dark colour and a firm flesh (all attributes, as a consumer we desire) but when sampled, prove to be rather bland and tasteless. In the end, it turned out to be a mongrel of a tomato. Everything is a compromise. I hope that has cleared up any misunderstanding.
