CAT just told me that my CDMA internet services is going to be closed down soon hence I'm now looking at switching to 3G, I want to stay with CAT because having their monthly billing is useful for a number of reasons that I wont go in to here.

But the spec I was given by CAT for the aircard I need in order to get their service looks like this:

850mhz, HSPA/3G/UTMS, 7.2 Mbps

There's loads of aircards out there but I can't find one that is rated for UTMS or full blown HSPA, HSPDA (down) or HSPUA (up) yes but not HSPA. Also, UTMS capability is nowhere to be seen, am I missing something here?

thanks

Thanks, but if the spec states HSPDA does that not imply only the downloads are compliant whilst uploads will not and will be at a slower speed? And, is UTMS a protocol within 3G?

You may be over-thinking this to little or no positive end? I believe CAT's 3G network can support any/all 3G rates/protocols up to HSDPA (42 Mbps)/HSUPA (11 Mbps). I'd submit you are unlikely to see those rates, even with "compliant" equipment, and if you could, you'll burn through your allotment in a few hours. ;)

CAT My is selling the D-Link DWM 156, this supports 72/5.6 Mbps, and is available for ~ 1,290 baht (in IT Shops), and should be sufficient. Again, any 850 Mhz 3G air-card should suffice.

If you have unique requirements: Mac, external antenna, need to use AIS 3G, etc. then those may steer/limit your choices/options.

It's UMTS not UTMS. It's simply an acronym for Universal Mobile Telephone System. Also ignore the whole "HSPA, HSDPA and HSUPA" part. Even 3G, 3G+, 3.9G etc are all bs - the advertising people have taken over the world and are misusing acronyms right, left and center.

As Loma says, any 850MHz 3G aircard will work. The 850 is the important part (as opposed to 900MHz, used by a couple of other companies). If you get an aircard that says it's 850MHz 3G, it'll work. One that'll do 7.2Mbps HSDPA would work just fine, and probably be the cheapest at around 1,200 to 1,500 Baht. You can also get 21Mbps or even 42Mbps.

For the most part, the rest of the marketing hype and the abuse of acronyms is just padding.

Sorry, that should be 7.2Mbps.
