Fighter jets intercept small plane that violated Obama's airspace < br /> 2012-05-12 07:29:29 GMT+7 (ICT) LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) -- Two F-16 fighter jets intercepted a small plane near Los Angeles in California on Friday morning when the pilot accidentally flew into airspace which had been temporarily closed due to the presence there of President Barack Obama, officials said. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said the incident happened at around 9:45 a.m. local time when a Piper 28 aircraft entered restricted airspace in the vicinity of northeast Los Angeles. Two F-16 fighter jets responded immediately until it was told to land at El Monte Airport.NORAD released few details about the incident, but an El Monte police spokesman said it appeared to be a mistake by a possible student pilot. He was taken into custody by local law enforcement until Secret Service agents arrived at the airport and questioned him, after which he was released without charge. The airspace over a part of Los Angeles had been closed because Obama was there on a brief visit to deliver remarks at an event for his re-election campaign. The president had just boarded Air Force One at Los Angeles International Airport when the incident happened. It took off en-route to Reno in Nevada a few minutes after the Piper 28 landed without incident at El Monte Airport.NORAD is tasked to prevent air attacks against North America and safeguard the sovereign airspaces of the United States and Canada by responding to unauthorized air activity approaching and operating within these airspaces, and provide aerospace and maritime warning for North America. It is allowed to monitor, shadow, divert from flight path, direct to land and even destroy targets which are deemed to be a security threat to North America. tvn.png
