Lacquered Bowl Manufacturer Sought

Featured Replies

I wonder if any long-term CM residents know the whereabouts of lacquer-ware manufacturers for modern items such as this bowl >

I've looked around Baan Tawai and Airport Plaza OTOP (from where the photo was taken) but hit dead ends or was misled.

I am seeking the 'finisher' or a painter, to produce similar results on other products. AFAIK, the gold or silver leaf is applied before 3 or more clear coats and the end result is stunning!

Did you try the laquerware factory shop on the way to Borsang, on the RHS opposite the umbrella factories (i forget its name)

I would say thats a more tourist sort of place, expensive, coaches (read rip off)...but they do have the craftsmen sitting in the back and maybe you can ask for some idea.

Not sure what you are looking for but was wondering if those little bowls they put carved soap in would do. You could inquire of a seller in the night Bazaar. Possibly the makers of those bowls would be able to accommodate you.

The first place I would try to find a manufacturer is to take the photos to the Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce on Tung Hotel Road. They should have a list of producers of laquerware in their handicraft listings.

Also there is an international fair in Bangkok twice yearly, and if you could get your fingers on a catalogue you might be able to track down the names of a couple of manufactures. You may get some help from the Thai commercial attache in Bangkok for that information if you cannot get a catalouge.

Vietnam is more known for this type of handicraft than Thailand, but if you insist on Thai products, my advice is to start with the Chamber of Commerce and then The International Gift Fair in BKK.

Thanks for the tips ... C of C is a good start.

Have tried calling at the touristy places but they're all for show and only want to talk BIG numbers unless selling off-the-shelf.

NB: There's some really shifty types associated with those places - one on Sankampheang Rd especially. Touts or employees I'm not sure, make the Bangla Rd go-go touts seem tame.

There used to be a bunch of stores/factories along Wualai Rd which runs off going south west at a 45 degree angle from the Chiangmai Gate, if memory serves me right. I think I have seen them there recently.

Yes we can do this for you (among many other things)

Please contact me trough PM as we're not allowed to post phone numbers and email addresses here.

These do come from Vietnam - Shepsel is right.

You will find plenty of shops around Ban Tawai that do gold leaf but not the lacquer finish.

It would probably be a two step process.

PM me if you need more info.

Hi John,....

We we do do the the two-step here (and I don't mean the dance)

We can do both the gold (or any other metallic color) and then the lacquer up to 7 layers.

But then again, we're not located in Ban Tawai, so you are, in a twisted way,..... right! tongue.png
