NBTC turns down Real Move plea

BANGKOK: -- Real Move's attempt to quickly expand its subscriber base has hit a snag after the national broadcasting and telecom watchdog declined to award the remaining 1.75 million mobile-phone numbers out of the 3.5 million allotted to CAT Telecom, which will pass on most numbers to Real Move to provide service.

Direk Charoenphol, chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC)'s number allocation committee, said the rejection follows CAT's refusal to pay the overdue total mobile-phone number fee of Bt6 million to the watchdog for the first lot of 1.75 million granted to CAT.

The payment for the first lot was due in April. CAT held back on the fee payment pending the probe into the legality of CAT-True Corp 3G-service partnership deals.

CAT has already passed on the first lot of phone numbers to Real Move to provide service under the CAT-True 3G deals.

An NBTC source said that the watchdog would soon examine how many numbers of the first lot are in use.

It might consider seizing the unused numbers or all 1.75 million numbers if CAT continues to delay payment of the fee.

Real Move is targeting 4 million customers this year, up from more than 1 million at present.

The NBTC had twice ordered its licence-holder CAT to pay the overdue fee.

CAT had requested about 5 million mobile-phone numbers this year for Real Move. The watchdog approved only 3.5 million.

After the NBTC awarded the first lot of 1.75 million, Real Move told CAT to urge the watchdog to award the remaining 1.75 million numbers.

Direk said that his committee had already approved the awarding but changed its mind after CAT's refusal to pay the number fee for the first lot.

I suppose that's what happens when you dont pay your suppliers. TRUE hasn't paid CAT so CAT hasn't paid the NBTC. What a farce.

I do not believe your statement is either accurate or reflective of the complex nature of this specific situation.

In any event, this may be why some are reporting issues porting (MNP) their numbers from TrueMove, or another service provider, to TrueMove H. There are simply no number available for these port-in customers. TrueMove H should just go out and buy back all the pre-paid SIMs in the channel? But maybe they're trying other methods?

LOMO. YOU are the one posting that TRUE has not paid any moneys to CAT. So it certainly could have SOMETHING to do with it.

Also it has been said that the whole CAT / TRUE deal is corrupt.

If someone is trying to MNP to TrueMove-H, they already *have* a number. Why would one need to be available? huh.png
