Thai Driving License -Name In Thai?

Featured Replies

Has been raised a couple of times at my bank and post office that my name and date of birth on my driving license is in both Thai & English which does not appear to be the norm as having checked a couple of friends licenses they are all in English.

The info below the license number is in Thai and the bottom part is in English.

Unusual or not?

Top half is in Thai, the bottom part is in English, 100% correct.

Hmm.

Just checked the license of er indoors.

Her name is in English top and bottom, whilst, as I said mine is in Thai at the top and English below-confusing.

Not really confusing. I fill out my application form in Thai, and my name appears on the top in Thai, and underneath in English. Perhaps a Thai filled out your form. The DLT will only put on your licence the information you have given them on your form. Passports, and a lot of official That documents are in both Thai and English now.

Maybe that is what happened, never really noticed until now,had the second 5 year license for 4 years. Only a couple of days ago that I checked with others who only had theirs in English after a bank official commented that it was unusual to see the name in Thai. Obviously it is not.

Guess I should check my documents more carefully! smile.png

English on both top and bottom on my 5 yr auto and motorcycle licenses.

Really not an issue, except if you use the license in a foreign country to say rent a car (as I have done).

I would prefer the top part (which is bigger, with bolder lettering) to state my name in English for clarity's sake.

Maybe they only put your name in Thai when you have been here long enough to know how Thais think.

Agree - it's best if your main driving licence name matches your passport, credit cards name etc.

Can't really see the point of having it in Thai, nothing else a person keeps on his/her person, is.

I suppose a person could show their mates for novelty value.....people like to do this.

Maybe it depends on what you take to prove your Identity, I took my yellow book, which obviously has my name in Thai, for those without one they would have to use your passport, which would be in English, so they use that when processing the DL.

How would a yellow book prove your identity? It has your name and they decide when making the yellow book application how to spell your name with Thai alphabet. I don't see anything in the yellow book that proves your identity. That doesn't mean they may not accept it, of course. Maybe they use the yellow book to get the spelling in Thai alphabet.

It was interesting to watch them at the Amphur office trying to spell my father's name, Argyll, with Thai alphabet.

Now that may be what I did.But my long term memory is far worse then my short term memory-I think!

For the office I used, the first time they did want my passport, but you are correct the yellow book does not prove identity, it proves you address. Which is on the back of your driving license.

The second time the previous DL was proof enough of my identity, with doctors certificate, and also my yellow book, plus money.

Renewed my five year licence last Tuesday, showed yellow tai ban and passport, on my new licence my name is in English on top and bottom whilst on the reverse my address is in Thai! On my yellow house book my name is in Thai so the option was there to show it on my licence but they chose to use English only for my name. They also used my passport number and not yellow book as ID.

There does not seem to be any hard and fast rule, and probably depends on the officer processing the licence. My first licence was issued in 2531 and was all in Thai, since then it has alternated from year to year till the introduction of 5 year licences.

Sounds like immigration......doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rules at any government places.
