Egypt's Mubarak sentenced to life in prison

CAIRO: -- Deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison on Saturday for ordering the killing of protesters during the uprising that swept him from power last year.

Presiding judge Ahmed Refaat also sentenced his former interior minister, Habib el-Adli, to life in prison on the same charge.

Mubarak verdict hearing starts

An Egyptian court began on Saturday a verdict hearing in the trial of ousted president Hosni Mubarak, charged with involvement in the killing of demonstrators.

Chief Judge Ahmed Rifaat opened the session shortly after Mubarak's helicopter arrival at at the court, at the Police Academy on Cairo's outskirts.

Egyptian Court Sentences Mubarak to Life Imprisonment

CAIRO, June 2 (RIA Novosti) - The Cairo criminal court has sentenced former president Hosni Mubarak to life imprisonment on Saturday as he was declared guilty for deaths of protesters during an uprising in January 2011.

Mubarak has been under arrest at the International Medical Center near Cairo. Mubarak, his two sons, former Interior Minister Habib al-Adli and six of his aides are accused in corruption and killings of hundreds of protestors during the popular uprising that ousted Mubarak from power.

The interior minister was also sentenced to life imprisonment at the trial under the charges.

Mubarak was overthrown in February 2011 after an 18-day popular uprising. Over 800 people were killed during the revolution, many of them protesters shot dead by security forces.

After the sentence was announced, violent clashes have flashed between the lawyers of the parties and relatives of convicts and defendants. The convicts were immediatedly taken out of the court room.

Mubarak is being kept in comfortable surroundings. He is incarcerated in name only.

The man is bedridden and dying. The military still has a free hand and may at some point act in the time honoured tradition of the region and seize more power in Egypt.
