I have an 11 year old daughter, but kinda confused on what it is your really looking for ? A school ? Info about home schooling ? Feild trips ? CM and norhtern Thailand has many wonderful places to go

Where are you moving from ? August is the middle of the school year here. Late march to early May is summer break

As i'm considering homeschooling as one of the options, i'm concerned about her social life. you know...having friends. so i am looking for a group who meet on a regular basis, or occationally or once in a while familiy field trips with children of similar age.

we are moving from BKK and to my understanding international schools are resuming in august.

Can't speak for all schools. the ones I know started late May.

What area will you be living, and you failed to mention if your daughter is Thai or ???

and speaks what Thai ? English ? other ?

Lots of kids up here and things are very family friendly. Really

If you are talking British curriculum international schools, you are correct. Their academic year is almost identical to that in the UK, except they start, and therefore finish, a couple of weeks earlier.

Right, i have to be more specific.

my daughter will be 12 shortly and speaks english as a second language.

I don't know where we will be living since we havn't got there yet, but intend to live in the city, whatever that means. i'm considering homeschooling for her.

so i will be looking for around same age group, english speaking children. We are not thai and our language will be very hard to find.

i guess there are lots of kids her age but i think it would be hard to meet them if she will be staying at home while homeschooling

Hello,

Every Monday morning, following the International school holiday schedule, there is the Chiang Mai community home school coop that meets at the Chiang Mai church. This of course is a English speaking group with families from many different parts of the world. Parents in this group also often plan weekly social gatherings and other outings.

Also have heard that http://www.tlcchiangmai.org, which was closing due to the owners moving back to the US, is coming under new ownership.

Hi OP, have you thought about sports, music, these types of activites? I'm not sure what's available with these, tho..

To be honest, I'm consider home schooling/ not schooling my kids too as the whole idea of having a kid sit in a classroom wasting their time seems like a waste.

Will be interested in hearing more responses for recommendations.

Chiang Mai is loaded with activities. Our son was eleven, and we were' mostly traveling the first year, but in Chiang Mai found plenty to do with different martial arts clubs, plenty of art and music schools. He was is involved in all three activities during his home schooling time, and via different Chiang Mai websites was able to find great private instructors for both music and art lessons. Given that a properly organized home school student can complete more work in half a day than a full time in school student, extra activities are just gravy. Boy scouts provided some good outdoor activities, but Chiang Mai could do with a more community based outdoor club of some kind for families. For the very active family there is the CM hiking club and one group of Hasher's welcome the whole dang family. not to mention there are a couple threads listing family activities in Chiang Mai on this forum.

Found that I also was able to organize several group activities with fellow enthusiastic Chiang Mai home schooled, much to every bodies enjoyment.

This is no comparison when it comes to costs, as my son is current enrolled at an international school, to international schools cost. The cost of clubs and tutors, including 1 on 1 Thai tutoring, is significantly cheaper yet provides more variety than a routine day at school. Even with 3 different tutors, boy scouts, Monday morning coop, my son was more stimulated and had more free time while being home schooled. Note that this all applies to a pre-teen, teens are well..........

Wow!!! that is so encouraging.

We have lived in Bangkok for almost two years now, and my daughter is attending school. When I was considering homeschooling for her, I couldn't find the same age group, only for younger children. On top of that, I find it very difficult to meet children apart from school. although I know there's a bunch of them. Maybe like my daughter, they come back home from school at 4pm.

Also, since she is at school every day we can't take any extra curricular activity apart from the school's, there is a no time for anything besides homework..

So your words regarding homechooling are very convincing to me, and if hesitant until now i'm much stronger about it now.

Thank you all so much

If you'd like information about the Monday morning coop you can contact the Google group CHECK12. Grace international school offers what they call extension service, which allows soon class choices, library, pool, and sport facilities access. I know a few families whom subscribe to the ESD program at Grace for regular access to the nice pool only! The ESD program also works with many of the families involved with the home school coop at the CMCC, so they are always current on which parents to contact to joining in.
