Innovate Navigator - Anyone Familiar With This One?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I bought an Innovate Navigator from the big market on Thanon Worachak a bit ago.

So far it has steered me wrong a couple of times. But the big problem is the English manual. It tells you how to use the EBook feature, the TV, radio, bluetooth, all kinds of things I won't use. But not a word about how to enter "user selected" locations. Not a word about any of the navigation features - you have to figure them out yourself. I was able to drive from Taksin Road to Suphanburi, and it only tried to mess me up twice. There's two exit ramps - I believe around Phra Pin Klao - which are within a few meters of one another. It just said "keep left" which would have been a mistake, as the second ramp on the left is the correct direction. There are a number of preset locations for BKK, and other cities, but I need to add my own.

Knowing which lane to be in is (for me) the biggest fault of the iPhone, (at times messing me up for over an hour) which is the reason I decided to buy this new unit.

It speaks English and Thai, but kinda funky. You approach a bridge with no other place to go but the bridge, and it tells you to "enter the bridge". There are more quirks like that. I won't belabor the point.

Googling the name of the unit I get zero hits. I'm suspicious of the origins of the product and software. It wasn't expensive - Less than 3,000 baht.

If anyone has heard of this, owns one, or knows how to enter one's own locations, please let me know.

Thanks!

That's not a problem with the *iphone*, it's a problem with the software you had on it.

What app were you using? There are a variety of very competent navigation apps on iPhone. The ones to stay away from are the Thai-made ones, for sure. I used - no problem entering a destination, it just can't find it.

SygicSEA at $40 is the best choice.

Thanks DaffyDuck!

I'm downloading SygicSEA right now.

I heard that SygicSEA was the way to go from others on the forum. I don't know what it is about me and searches, I just don't find what I'm looking for. In the last year+ since I've owned an iPhone I've searched for an alternative to the iPhone map - 2 or 3 times and couldn't find a thing!

I think the iPhone Maps program has some FATAL flaws. Literally! Who would make a blue dot (representing your location) over a blue route? It takes a second to sort out where you are. Given the millions of iPhones out there, I'm sure this has killed people! Even milliseconds taking one's eyes off the road when driving can be deadly.

I think I'll use the Innovate Navigator as a back-up or find out what kind of educational games for kids are on it and dedicate it to that.

Thanks!

Shouldn't that be under "philosophy" or a "lifestyle" thread. You just described the human condition. ;-)

That's why I use third party navi apps - maps wasn't intended as a driving turn by turn app.

I think you will find Apple introducing a viable alternative next week. ;-)

Glad I was able to help.

The new Apple Maps app, available in Fall, is SWEET!

As I understand, only parts of the US have coverage. That doesn't help much here in Thailand.

You got some bad information. The navigation, and finding things works quite well, you have a choice of just a simple map (street view) or google earth, many buildings, points of interest, and businesses are clearly seen, some are in the wrong place. Sometimes it doesn't give you the route you want, and differentiating between whether to make a hard left or a slow left, has messed me up for countless hours. Generally, even the Apple Maps on iPhone is pretty good - except for the 'deadly' feature I mention above. I'm still using it as well as the Innovate, and the Appstore App - SygicSEA - probably worth the $40 US it cost to get it.

With the installed iPhone map app, you might have to do some searching to find your destination using a search engine, but on the SygicSEA, and Innovate, there are a lot of department stores, and POI's in the database. When it's not getting me lost I am pretty happy with it.

Thanks!

I think an Apple fan boy is touting the stand alone Apple maps that aren't out yet.
