Why it everyone talking about United winning 5 trophies...and not 6

Why is the Community Shield not included?

- Champions League

- Premier League

- FA Cup

- Carling Cup

- World Team Cup

- Community Shield

I know that the community shield is no great feat, but it surely counts as trophy, or does the community shield get tallied on last seasons trophies?

It was called the Charity Shield until the marketing men got their hands on it, the money goes to Charity and the clubs dont make a profit.

Its like saying the Ajax Cup or similar competitions played in pre season should count as trophys won.

Interesting read..

The doctor who saved Man Utd star's career

LONDON, England (CNN) -- It only takes one injury to end an athlete's career. Anything that impairs an athlete's performance could mean they're no longer good enough for the top flight -- that's why the best athletes need the best treatment if they're to recover from injury.

Manchester United star and England international footballer Owen Hargreaves is known for his versatility and exceptional work rate, but in 2008 his season was cut short by tendonitis.

Hargreaves, 27, was told he would need surgery on both knees to save his career.

That's when he decided to travel to the small mountain ski village of Vail, Colorado, to meet the "knee whisperer" -- Dr Richard Steadman.

Steadman became fascinated with the way the knee functions and how it can be injured during his university days playing American football.

Now known as "Doctor Steady," Steadman is knee specialist to the stars, counting Real Madrid ace Ruud van Nistelrooy, American football sensation Bruce Smith, and even the King of Spain among his clients.

"I just think he understands the athletes, the significance of the injuries and he's able to deal with the personalities that go along with these injuries," Hargreaves told CNN. Watch Owen Hargreaves talking about his recovery »

Steadman works with a team of 75 doctors who have together repaired some 16,000 knees.

He has developed pioneering knee treatments, including "micro-fracturing," which involves making a small hole in a patient's bone to draw out marrow blood, allowing the patient's own stem cells and growth factors to make new cartilage.

Dr. Steadman says the secret to healing athletes is letting them do what they do best. "I became convinced early in my career that mobility was important and immobility was a bad thing.

"I was one of the first ones to say, 'I don't think we'll use casts, we'll work on braces, we'll try to get motion back'," he told CNN.

Owen Hargreaves has about a month left of rehab in Vail. His days follow a strict routine: Wake up, rehab, eat lunch, rehab, eat dinner and rest.

"It's been frustrating at times," says Hargreaves.

"I don't really watch our games because as an athlete, and being so competitive, it's hard to watch when you normally would be out there."

Steadman says Hargreaves will return to football next season better than ever, adding that athletes often build inner strength from overcoming what could be a career-ending injuries.

Hargreaves shares that view. "I'm going to come back stronger and hopefully add a couple of years onto my career," he said.

For others the road to recovery can be slower. British middleweight boxer Michael Watson almost died after collapsing at the end of his 1991 title fight with Chris Eubank.

"I took a punch, everything went blank and I woke up in a bed. I thought I was dreaming," Watson told CNN.

Watson spent the next 40 days in a coma and had to undergo six brain operations. Neurosurgeon Peter Hamlyn, who operated on Watson, told CNN, "He was as close to death as I think it's possible to go, and survive. And he stayed there for longer than anyone I've ever known."

It was thought that Watson would never walk again, but after years of slow recovery, he was able to enter the 2003 London Marathon, completing it over six days. "His [recovery] is by far the most remarkable I've ever seen," said Hamlyn.

There's now a close bond between Hamlyn and Watson, and Steadman's patients are similarly grateful for their recoveries.

The hallway of Steadman's clinic is lined with the signed shirts of his former patients; the number 10 Manchester United shirt signed by Ruud van Nistelrooy reads simply "Thank you for giving back my dream."

This is why SAF has as many trophies as he has...

Ferguson fires warning

United chief warns over complacency

Manchester United chief Sir Alex Ferguson has warned his squad about getting complacent over their defence of the Premier League title.

The Red Devils have powered their way to a commanding position at the summit of the table in recent weeks, and some bookmakers have even paid out on them winning the title.

They remain four points clear of Chelsea and Liverpool, but have two games in hand on their rivals.

But Ferguson is quick to point to La Liga, where Barcelona have seen their seemingly insurmountable 11-point lead reduced to just four points.

"Barcelona have been playing Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday since January," opined Ferguson.

"They did have an 11-point lead, now it is four and for the first time this season they lost a game after being in front.

"It is a warning, and there are plenty of them, that if you take your foot off the pedal you can get a kick in the teeth."

Squad warning

Ferguson also warned his players that anyone thinking the title was in the bag would soon find themselves sidelined.

"They would have one attempt at being complacent and it would be the last," said Ferguson.

"We have plenty of bodies in the dressing room who would come down on them."

The Scot insists that winning the Premier League is their biggest opportunity to win a 'major trophy'.

"I would be happy if we only won the Premier League from this point," he said. "It is a major trophy.

"I would love to see us winning the UEFA Champions League again. That is my big desire.

"But at this moment the Premier League has to be the best opportunity.

"If we keep our heads straight and focused we have a big chance."

Seem to recall in 2000 - 2001 season, Liverpool fans hailed the winning of 5 cups didn't they?

Looking at our remaining fixture list and assuming we win our game against Portsmouth to put us level on games played, thus making us 10 points up with 10 to go. Let’s take a conservative look at what we will need in the coming weeks to put this one to bed.

March

14 Man United v Liverpool (H) Draw +1

21 Fulham v Man United (A) Draw +1

April

5 Man United v Aston Villa (H) Win +3

11 Sunderland v Man United (A) Win +3

19 Wigan v Man United (A) Win +3

22 Man United v Portsmouth (H) - (Replacement for Postponed match)

25 Man United v Tottenham (H) Draw +1

May

2 Middlesbrough v Man United (A) Win +3

9 Man United v Man City (H) Win +3

16 Man United v Arsenal (H) Draw +1

24 Hull v Man United (A) Win +3

+22 points by my calculation putting us on 90 points.

Now if LP wins all 9 except for the draw against us they will add 28 points putting them at 85 points. LP’s schedule looks to me to be easier than Chelsea’s at this point.

If Chelsea wins all of their remaining games they would have 88 points. But after looking at their fixture list, it might be a big ask.

Interesting calculations there James, although I think United will beat Liverpool comfortably on the 14th.

There are certainly a few potential banana skins there, but as long as we don't get too many more injuries and suspensions, and the players don't get complacent it should be over before the final week of the season. :D

I reckon this is how it will finish

1. Man Utd

2. Chelsea

3. L@#%@#$#

4. Aston Villa

5. Everton

6. Arsenal :o

I really thought that Villa had a good chance of breaking up the usual suspects, but their form has hit the buffers somewhat in recent weeks. They don't really have enough depth in terms of squad, but they have certainly had a good season. If they can turn it around in the next game, then they can maybe chase down Liverpool for the third spot. I think Chelsea have got momentum now, and they have an experienced side.

Because it seems that the pressure is getting to everyone I thought I would lighten things up at our (well SAF's) expense.

Here is a picture of Fergie from last night's game after Van-de-man bobbled one; now let's add our own quotes for fun as to what Fergie is really thinking..

"Bloody He_ll - that wine Jose gave me last week is doing my head in"

"Did I just see Alan Smith try to kiss Berba?, must be these glasses"

Not a thing of beauty but took our chances, no dancing on the touch line this time Jose, sucker

United rode their luck. If thats the best Italy can offer no wonder Platini and Blatter are concerned.

Giggs is re -born. The weaving run he made in the second half was like winding the clock back.

Given he played the whole game it would appear that he wont play in the run on side v Liverpool.Time for Fletcher ,Park and maybe Tevez to step up

Do we know yet who is the ref for the game on Sat? I can't find it anywhere.

Edit: I did find it on the Guardian website drum roll......

Alan Wiley

Some stats i found on his bookings this year in games involving MU or LP in which he officiated.

LP 5 games, 21 yellows and 2 red cards

MU 3 games, 8 yellows

(for the year, 32 games, 91 yellows and 3 reds)

Looks like we will be in for a card fest.

I can't wait to read this Forum on Sunday, i really can't, to say there will be some Fireworks will be an understatement... :o

It wouldn't be the biggest surprise though if it's a bit of a cagey and nervy game that ends in a nil-nil draw, what with both sides having it taken out of them mid-week. Myself, i'd love to see an end to end goal fest even if we were on the losing end. All too often though when the big sides meet in these highly anticipated matches that are built-up so much, it ends in anti-climax.

Yep, 3 months of hype and 90 minutes of boring football. Hopefully not.

This is a loss that though hurts, will make us stronger and ultimately i believe can help refocus our efforts for the final push.

Had we been blown away tonight, as the score might suggest, i would be feeling down, but as it is and the way we played, i feel quite philosophical about it. Just like Phelan said, "just a bad day in the office" - you get those. Chins up boys!
