My Thai wife and step daughter have just received their settlement visa and will join me in the UK in July.

Can my wife apply for a National Insurance number as I would like to use her personal tax allowance to offset some rental income I receive.

Does the NI number have to be obtained in person at a Job Centre?

thanks for any guidance

Your wife's Settlement Visa makes her a Permanent Resident of the UK and is only one step away from being granted citizenship, should she apply for it.

This means that she is entitled to practically the same rights and privileges as a UK citizen bar voting. It even entitles her to 'home' rates for higher education fees after she's lived in the UK for three years.

I can't remember how you go about getting an NI number but she's definitely entitled to one. Pop into your local citizen's advice bureau or just give them a call.
