webfact
Chuwit: PM should ask family about gambling den THE NATION BANGKOK: -- An illegal gambling den located off Soi Phetchaburi 5 in central Bangkok has been operated by a relative of "an important person based in Dubai", Rak Thailand Party leader Chuwit Kamolvisit alleged yesterday. He also called on Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, as a sister of former premier Thaksin, to ask her relatives whether any of them knew of the den, known widely among gamblers in Bangkok as Je Pheo's den, which had been operating for more than 20 years. Chuvit said he would lodge this issue as an agenda item in any future no-confidence debate against the Yingluck government. He also called on Bangkok police chief Pol Maj-General Khamronwit Thoopkrajang to inspect the area around Soi Phetchaburi 5 to locate the den, but said he would not be surprised if Khamronwit or area police said later that they had not found it. "Gambling dens are a major source of income of policemen. Everyone knows it," he added. The flamboyant MP also named other dens in Bangkok: Otto Den, Phatthanakan 77 Den and King Phet Den, whose operation he said was recorded on Monday night in a video clip. In an exclusive story on Je Pheo's den in Kom Chad Luek daily newspaper, it was reported that clients who drive to the den use a valet service to park their cars in the next alley, Soi 7. Those who park on Phetchaburi Road would have their vehicles marked with yellow stickers, to let police know not to issue parking tickets for them. There is one entry to the den, a door located near a spirit house, with clients required to leave their mobile phones and purses or wallets. "Those passing through this gate can carry only cash, at a minimum Bt10,000," said the Thai-language daily, quoting a former client as an unnamed source. Newcomers must be accompanied by regulars who are familiar with the guards. Clients walk through metal detectors, before going upstairs to enter a large room, where there are nine card tables, a VIP room for baccarat games, another space of 10 baccarat tables and a number of traditional gambling games. Card or game tables are run by individual operators, who pay daily fees and commissions to the den owners, the source added. -- The Nation 2012-07-
EyesWideOpen
Hmmm..... I actually sort of admire Chuwit. He seems to be the only public figure with the balls to point out the corruption side of Thailand. What public figure said there were no casinos operating in Bangkok a few months ago? Seem to recall it was the Bangkok chief of police. But it seems Chuwit is upping the ante. I thought the normal modus operandi in Thailand when doing the face saving name and shame was to use a single initial to indicate the person. So of course nobody really knows whose hand was caught in the cookie jar. But in this case Chuwit is hitting a bit closer to home.... " relative of "an important person based in Dubai". I bet right now there are some police chiefs in Bangkok that are not having a good day today.. " Captain Sombat !!!!! Hurry up and get our casino shut down, there will be some heat coming this week. We can re-open next week"
theblether
Has no one told Chuwit that gambling is illegal in Thailand, and the police would not allow anything illegal to happen. Some people have got a very low opinion of Thai police. That's not nice.
Popular Post Yunla
Chuvit said he would lodge this issue as an agenda item in any future no-confidence debate against the Yingluck government. It takes some real minerals to campaign like Chuwit does in this political climate and background corruption. He understands that to kill the Hydra there is no point kicking it in the knees, you have to cut off its heads to stop it. History is made of heroic individuals like that. Good luck to him.
GentlemanJim
Stands back in amazement! Chuvit has really thrown the cat amongst the pigeons now. I hope he has a good security detail and a good set of bullet proof vests. It makes me wonder why the Thaksin governments have never just legalized casino's, but then they probably realize that would lead to the utter ruination of the country, as the Thai's seem to have a propensity for gambling that makes even the chinese look meek. Good luck to Chavit, he deserves a medal and every vote he gets.

Should this gambling den turn out to involve the younger brother named Payup, the irony meter would be pegged out. . Popular Post ThaiOats
Remember when he first unveiled the Casino at Ratchada? Wichean the then Police Chief got transferred to the NSC, replacing Tawil who had over 20 years of service and no corruption against him, to pave way for Priewpan, Thaksin's brother-in-law. Chalerm asserted that Priewpan was a man of dignity who doesn't take money, a nak-leng, and is the man for the job. Chalerm vowed there would be no casino under Priewpan's watch and guess what happened. Chuwit unveiled 5 casinos since then and Priewpan is STILL the Police Chief. This recent one would be the 6th and nothing gets done to the Brother-In-Law. Yay for intergrity!

Popular Post geriatrickid
Allegedly, the den has been operating for 20+ years. Pehaps some additional questions should be asked; How does a gambling den run during multiple Democrat and military controlled governments? How does an alleged "Thaksin" controlled gambling den operate in the Democrat stronghold of Bangkok where the governor detests all things Thaksin? If the gambling den has been around for 20+years, then surely the Democrat regime under Abhisit, which was no friend of the Thaksin family, would have done something, since Mr. Abhisit was so "clean". The gambling den might or might not be run by a Thaksin relative. If it is, that doesn't mean the Thaksin relative might not be one of the family outcasts. Gambling dens in Thailand do not survive for 20 years unless there are powerful protectors and those protectors would have been around long before a man named Thaksin was elected PM. Of course, this all assumes that there is even a gambling den. To date, Chuvit has made all sorts of accusations, yet he is never able to back it up with actual evidence. Before, the Nation broke the story, why didn't someone go and take pictures of the valet parking, or the vehicles? Why didn't one of the Nation's journalists knock on the door and ask if there was gambling inside? Lots of allegations, but no evidence presented. And before anyone says, you go knock on the gambling den door, I say, Nationmedia has its own media facilities, why not run with the story, as it would have embarrassed the government had the story been substantiated.
