Phuket to install CCTV system

WE CAN CCTV YOU!

Phuket is to install an extensive system of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to aid authorities in the protection of the province from terrorist threats and to increase surveillance of areas of the island that are flashpoints for crime. A working group, consisting of IT experts, town planners and architects, is to present a master plan to the PPAO by April, Dr Kosol Tang-uthai, advisor to the president of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (PPAO) President announced recently.

The 2.5 million baht CCTV system will give the police and security services a leg up against offenders and allow for better monitoring of hotspots around the island. “Initially the areas where we will install the cameras are Sapan Hin, Chalong Bay, Rassada Port and Phuket's Gateway, Dr Kosol said. “There will be sub viewer centres in each area as well. This will be a pilot project for local organizations, such as Municipalities and Tambon Administration Organizations, to monitor to see if they should invest in similar projects in their areas.”

The CCTV units required for the project range in cost from 15,000 to 100,000 baht each, with night shot, 100-metre zoom and motion-sensor cameras required to cover all eventualities.

Further development of the project will be assessed after the initial pilot scheme runs its course, but plans are already being proposed for the province to purchase of an eight million baht mobile CCTV unit, carrying 16 wireless CCTV cameras, which can be used at events and festivals. “The bus will be very useful for the officers monitoring special occasions when there are many VIPs present.”

He added that the CCTV plan is only one of several PPAO projects being proposed to assist the police and security services in there work, one of which calls for the establishment volunteer groups of residents to work with local police.
