My wife and the neighbour are usually sharing/exchanging food amongst themselves. And today she received something called 'kaeng hoh' and I kid you not, it smelled like a urinal not cleaned lately. I did mention this to the wife and she agreed and just smiled. sick.gif

Sorry to tell you but l asked the mrs and she says, from your spelling, it's curry made with fish shit. bah.gif She says most cannot eat it cos it smells awful. sad.png

I admire that in Thai people.

They don't just eat the fish fillets and throw the rest away like we do, or with beef it's a disgrace to see how much of the animal is just discarded in the West.

Come one Semper stop being a fussy farang with a huge carbon footprint and eat your fish pooh curry ! tongue.png

By the way to all the posters who constantly accused me of being solely negative about Thai culture, this is a POSITIVE comment about Thai tradition, so eat your hats !

Can't disagree with this. In the morning, I'll ask her how comfy the sofa was. laugh.png

Hey Aneliane...why the rat avatar? I had you more like a ferret.......much more friendlier and mischievous.....I know....off topic.

But with the smelly food.........my wife even admits that it smells and still woofs it down.

With food I try everything.......and after being here for some time, I know my limits.......and so does my wife, so beforehand she can tell me if I'll like something new or not...........my personal taste tester.

Do not forget that some western food smell to Thais. I do not sleep on the sofa. I have a spare bedroom.

There's a bean - satoh or maybe sator - which, when taken with garlic and pla rah, is so evil, so appalling, so nasty and so poisonous , that its aroma on the breath, would jam radar. When my much beloved eats it, the effects are to fill our bedroom with fumes which make sleep for me quite impossible. One solution, I've found, is to turn on the attached bathroom's extractor fan and leave the connecting door ajar.

It also helps to ensure that she faces away from me, and I from her.

The problem is that the a/c is on full chat all night and unless I'm first out of bed next morning, I get a lot of verbal about wasting electricity. She has no idea about how terrible her breath is and takes it as some kind of insult if I try to explain.

Luckily, we have two bedrooms, so there's always the ultimate escape. Even at 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning, I'm prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice and make a change. And so, the second solution comes into force.

I kick her out!

I think she's talking about the southern soup/kaeng made of fish intestines. But it's not that (I tried it once) but this is a northern (CM) dish.

Imagine letting rip under the covers after eating that. A gas mask might not be enough!

Hence the sofa option. wink.png

Perfect night for a 69, I say.

My gf has been over living with myself and my father both this summer and last summer. She buys a type of sliced bamboo in a jar at the local Asian supermarket. When she cooks that it smells like someone has shit. Stinks the house out for days. Her papaya salad does not smell the best also. But her green curry and suki more than make up for it. Absolutely divine :-)

I know the stuff. My friend from Nokhon S T uses it in a yellow curry with fish. Certainly hums but tastes great.

Ahaha...smelly some.

what is Kaeng Hoh? Sound like Northern Thai food, Think I never eaten.

Not every Thai can eat smelly food. I cannot, for instance. I cannot eat Pla Raa, Durian, Chicken's feet, Offals.

But some Western foods are also smelly, goat cheese! Eiwww...smell like damp and soaky clothes. :D

Coming back from Cambodia one time, the missus had brought something in a bag from Snooky that was brown, stinky and just looked plain evil. When she bought it it was chilled and didn't smell..

..but as it warmed up on the bus journey back we attracted a lot of negative attention.ermm.gif

She got it past immigration at Had Lek by concealing it somewhere they wouldn't have dared look...whistling.gif By that time it was rank and beginning to crawl by itself!

Her luck ran out at the minivan collecting us. The driver took one sniff and pointed at the nearest barrel bin.

To this day I have no idea what it was, but I'm glad it's gone.clap2.gif

I have spent the last 2 years surrounded by Thai girls (my wife, her friends and staff), who are constantly preparing or eating smelly Thai food.

If I could bring myself to eat this stuff I would be clinically obese by now. Luckily, I personally find it disgusting (smell, taste and texture).

I now only eat Westernised Thai food (no smelly stuff, no skin, no bones, no organs, no insects, no old fish, no fish sauce, and not too spicy).

Interestingly, I love Indian food (especially curry) and most Thais I know think that Indian food smells bad, where as I think it smells nice.

They are probably cooking and mixing a lot of dishes with Pla ra. Thai People love Pla Ra. Often described incorrectly as rotten fish, Pla Ra is the quintessential ingredient of Northern and North Eastern Thai cooking. In Isaan especially, Pla Ra is indispensable in many of the dishes.

Many Northern Thai women do not know how to cook anything other than Issan style, if I had this problem I would defiantly eat only Farang food as well.

I used to think Durian smelt bad until I tasted it. If you have not tried it you need to, it's truly an amazing fruit.

The smell doesn't bother me too much anymore.

Long, long ago, in Singapore, my American business partner had the best description I ever heard of Durian. "It is", he said, "like eating custard out of a well-used toilet bowl".

He had a way with words.
