Politics aside, no one doubts Yingluck's style

Kupluthai Pungkanon

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- During the past year, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has charmed people with her beautiful smile in Thailand and abroad. Admittedly, she is photogenic.

When Yingluck was elected, she had to deal with a lot of talk - both in terms of politics and fashion - surrounding the fact that she is the first Thai female prime minister.

In terms of fashion, as an attractive woman, and as people would expect of a wealthy businesswoman, she treads a difficult line between wanting to be a hi-so fashion plate and a prime minister worthy of the country's trust.

During these times, her style has been hit and miss, and sometimes her personal advisers fail to save her from making mistakes, as with the posh Burberry boots she wore during the floods.

However, Yingluck has changed in certain ways. She wears more traditional Thai cloth and fabrics, and has had specialists do her makeup and hair before stepping out of the house every day to overcome critics of her hairdo while she campaigned for votes. Although it is said that sometime she does the hair herself and likes to choose her own outfits.

She is still very much a fancier of high-end brands.

Her typical look involves as the key fashion piece a jacket blazer matched with a pencil knee-length skirt. The blazer is a good choice to cover the hip while looking smart.

Yingluck is very keen on vibrant colours. She has learned to distinguish herself from dull black-suit crowd with vivid colourful blazers and skirts; even if she has to wear a black jacket, she seems to have plenty of colourful plain and printed blouses and dresses to wear on the inside of the typical black suit.

As a female leader, Yingluck's style has been compared to other world fashion-spotting superiors like Michelle Obama or Carla Bruni. It was reported that Yingluck's blazers and matching pant and knee-length skirt suits are more akin to Bruni's style.

But as the country's leader - aside from the family-owned manufacturer Shinawatra Thai Silk - the prime minister is supposed to promote Thai fabric. Hence, these days she is often seen in exquisite, flattering Thai silk.

During recent diplomatic tours, Yingluck looked confident. Her style - matching blazer and knee-length skirt - seemed to suit her well. On one occasion, though, she wore orange Mudmee silk decorated with white lace sleeves, which according to an experienced fashion guru was completely a style miss.

"Poor mix-and-match," he said.

Ultimately, despite Yingluck's style, her political road is not a rosy one. Residents of any country in the world would certainly be more appreciative if their leader does the job well, than face-lifted; this request applies to the first woman prime minister of Thailand as well.

Rumour has it, however, that Yingluck has not repeated her outfits so far!

serious news report failure again from The Nation

I don't recall any such idiotic commentary on Abhisit's style.

Just drivel, just drivel... par for the course.

Very poorly written, I agree, and it sounds like they are trying to make her look all bling and no substance, I wonder where they got that idea from.

I don't think the article was particularly intended as news. It was more of a commentary on P.M. Yingluck's style. As for your comment about K.Abhisit, I believe he is more interested in substance than fancy suits and flashy cars.

"K.Abhisit, I believe he is more interested in substance than fancy suits and flashy cars."

maybe the flashy cars... Substance, though? Doesn't match with the nickname from the press corps

Nickname of opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva: Delayed handsome

Abhisit freely offers suggestions for resolving pressing problems like political conflicts and flood management but ... he should have implemented his ideas before he lost the general election. Despite his good looks, he acted too late. He should have translated his words into action when he was the prime minister.

And it is obviously not a news piece... no chance of that... But it may have been intended as such none the less.

But the one-year-in-office occasion is a good excuse for the YS bashers in the "media" to come out and have their fun.

If some of the criticism were specific and constructive and not just gratuitous dogma, it might be more interesting reading...

Maybe you care to enlighten us about her great achievements? I mean something real, solid... And don't send us back to the usual "Abhisit did nothing". What has she achieved that will leave a mark (no pun intended) ? How Thai people are better with her? Which electoral promise has been fully implemented (as per her promise) ? Not only a microscopic implementation to be the purpose of a photo op, please!

led her party to an election win to gain power, something abhsisit never did. I would call this a great achievement even if the opposition was basically garbage.

As for electoral promises, do you really believe that they should be completed the day after coming to power? sometimes these things take time to complete, in any country, not just here.

Don't worry, something might come to you.

Perhaps you'll even provide us with a quote of idiotic commentary on Abhsit... (that you don't recall)

ahhh yes, here it is.... exactly an hour later.

She didn't lead the party to victory, her brother did... after first proclaiming that she was his clone.

Electoral promises like One Tablet Per Child were promised for all to start in May, now... it's the end of the school year next year when 10% of that promise is projected to be in place (over a year and half late and even then for only 10% of what was pledged).

more of the same...

As I said, if the news (or you, for that matter) were to provide some specific and constructive criticism, this could make interesting reading.

As it is, it's just the same dogmatic, unintelligent cesspool as usual.

I appreaciate that!

I have to say I'd take Carla Bruni over Yingluck any day.

Smart, articulate in several languages, cultured, and not just in clothes horse culture,

and she plays, sings, writes and is a star on her own from her own efforts.

And she dresses better.

You could write the same post about any politician in from any party in any country (if that country allowed you to voice an opinion). Politicians, apart from the few worldwide who are willing to give up their liberty for what they believe in, seldom do a great deal of good that filters through to the masses. What has she done to adversely affect the people of Thailand? Can you name a politician who was not a dictator that did what they said they would do?

You should have been here. Abhist was to busy trying to-run the country to have time to worry about style. If he had as many votes as Yingluck had he might have done it but he did not have that many and the ones he did have didn't always agree with him. Then the Main opposition hired a group of terrorists for him to deal with., Which he did a very admirable job of he came to terms with them twice only to have the back out of the agreements.

I'm terribly sorry for being late to comment on this topic. I only want to express my sincere belief that PM Yingluck does have style and after her shopping trip to Paris will undoubtedly surprise all with her new wardrobe full of the latest Parisien fashion, business like, yet female dresses, all made from Thai silk. A wonder to behold, soothing to old eyes like mine and youth as well.

As for performance related to being PM, who cares :-)

How do you comment on a fashion comentary? I guess basically Yingluck is all style and no substance, just what a divided nation needs.

I think she is a very attractive women and I can see why she is a hit with Thai's who run on populist concepts....there are times beauty over rides brain power.

Currently she is not just the sister of Thaksin, but also becoming an increasingly populist woman among the Thai's. She should be considering her current posistion vs that of her brothers increase in disapproval.
