Narathiwat bomb briefly halts rail traffic; nobody hurt

THE NATION

30188232-01_big.jpg

SOUTHERN Border Provinces Administration Centre secretary-general Pol Colonel Tawee Sodsong meets with Narathiwat residents yesterday to explain the criteria used in paying compensation to people affected by violence in the deep South.

NARATHIWAT: -- A bomb exploded near a train track in Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district yesterday morning, disrupting rail services for a while.

Train No 447 was prevented from leaving Sungai Kolok Station at the scheduled time of 6.30am as security officials wanted to ensure the safety of the train and its passengers and also to facilitate the examination of evidence at the scene of the explosion.

Territorial-defence volunteers said they were conducting patrols on foot when the bomb went off at around 6.15am.

"Five of us were conducting the patrol when the bomb was detonated remotely," said the patrol team's chief, Mayusoh Dajeh. "The explosion was about 20 metres from us, so we were not injured."

The bomb blast left a 30-centimetre-deep, 60cm-wide hole on the shoulder of the railway but caused neither casualties nor damage to the track.

Security officials said about 3 kilograms of explosives were used in this blast. They believed the incident was related to insurgent activity in the deep South.

Deep South Watch director Srisompob Jitpiromsri said the violence had been intensifying in the southernmost region since Ramadan, the Islamic holy month, started in July.

"The severity of the attacks is unusually high when compared with the same period in other years. Large amounts of explosives are being used now," he said.

He said security officials must keep a close watch on the situation during the last phase of Ramadan this year.

Ramadan is a sacred month during which Muslims strictly observe their religious precepts.

"Attackers may step up violence this month to shake the morale of locals," Srisompob said. The southernmost region is predominantly Muslim.

Songkhla Governor Krissada Boonraj said security officials |had implemented strict safety measures.

"There are 17 main checkpoints on routes linking to Hat Yai district. Intelligence agencies have warned us that economic zones are being targeted," Krissada said.

He said all relevant officials were now working closely and strictly monitoring feeds from security cameras.

The Amir al-Mu'minin Foundation said the current wave of violence in the deep South had orphaned at least 3,344 children.

"They are on our register," said foundation president Abdulfata Longdeewa.

In Yala's Krong Pinang district, meanwhile, a young man was shot dead while watching motorcycle racing early yesterday.

The victim, Sudingman Mudor, was 19. Witnesses said a motorcyclist and a passenger stopped their |vehicle next to Sudingman's on the Yala-Betong Road before |the passenger suddenly pulled out |a gun and repeatedly shot Sudingman in the head.

On Sunday night, another Yala resident, Saiming Hama, was also gunned down in his home in Yaha district.

Police are investigating the case in a bid to nail down the culprits.

Nakhon Si Thammarat airport resumes service

image_201208140942522303263E-AB03-BA22-F8604ADF74DA2EDF.jpg

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, Aug 14 -- Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport resumed service this morning after a temporary suspension on Monday afternoon due to dense smoke from nearby grassland fires.

Nakhon Si Thammarat Gov Wiroj Jiwarangsan said that the grass fire near the airport runway was completely extinguished by 11pm last night and that airlines could operate normally this morning.

He urged the residents to avoid burning brush and scrub to clear land near the airport as it could interfere with flights.

Nakhon Si Thammarat airport director Nisit Sombat said earlier that the facility used four buses to move some 300 passengers and staff to Surat Thani airport as their flights could not operate due to impaired visibility from the fires.

The fire moving within 500 metres of the runway and firefighters were called in to control the blaze, which was extinguished at around 11pm.

The airport was closed at around 3.45pm yesterday.

In a related development, Songkhla-based meteorological service director Wanchai Sakudomchai said that wildfire haze from Sumatra affecting the southern provinces was still worrisome due to dry weather, particularly in Songkhla's Hat Yai district, Satun and Trang.

He said that air quality in the affected areas is still at acceptable levels, but he warned motorists to be careful as the smog could affect visibility. (MCOT online news)

Thai-Cambodian trading zone to be established

BANGKOK, 14 August 2012 (NNT) – Thailand and Cambodia have recently held a workshop on the creation of Asean rice market and trading cooperation mechanism. Both nations agreed to set up a trading zone at the Thai-Cambodian border.

According to Permanent Secretary for Commerce Yanyong Puangrach, the Thai-Cambodian meeting covered discussions on the establishment of a Thai-Cambodian trading zone. Thailand will also import Cambodian paddy to be milled for export, which will increase the rice value.

Mr Yanyong said all the rice will be graded to prevent imported rice being mixed with the Thai rice. He added the government will gradually release the rice stock lot by lot to avoid price drop.

In addition, the Permanent Secretary for Commerce stated both countries also discussed preparation to set up an ASEAN federation of rice traders comprising five member nations including Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam. The issue will be forwarded to the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting, to be held during September and October.

Masks to be distributed to Southern provinces affected by smog

SONGKLA, 14 August 2012 (NNT) - The Public Health Ministry is distributing 50,000 clinical masks to five Southern provinces, shrouded in smog caused by Indonesia’s wild fires.

Public Health Minister Witthaya Buranasiri said smog from forest fires in Indonesia's Sumatra continued to blanket five provinces in the South: Phuket, Songkla, Narathiwat, Yala and Satun. The ministry has instructed the local health offices to closely monitor the health of residents in affected areas.

Mr Witthaya said that 10,000 masks have been delivered to each of the five provinces in order to prevent residents from inhaling the small particles in the air. Hospitals have also been instructed to prepare all necessary medication and be on stand-by on a 24-hour basis.

Chief of Songkhla’s Office of Disease Prevention and Control 12, Dr. Suwit Thammapaolo, said that in light of the worsening air quality, five at-risk groups for respiratory illnesses would include small children, the elderly, allergy sufferers, and those with heart conditions and asthma. Members of the risky groups are advised to stay indoors and seek medical help if their conditions worsen.
