Tiger disco fire: Police to call in forensics experts from Bangkok

PHUKET: Forensics experts from Bangkok will be called in to assist Phuket officers in their investigation into what caused the deadly inferno at Tiger Discotheque on Patong’s Soi Bangla early this morning.

Govt: Water management projects transparent

BANGKOK, 17 August 2012 (NNT) – The government is prepared to reveal to the public its 1-year performance report. It insists that the water management projects have been transparent.

In response to the opposition’s concerns over the 350-billion-baht water management project, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ensured that the all projects have been conducted with transparency. She also dismissed the rumors that she had a disagreement with Chief Advisor of the coalition Chart Thai Pattana Party Banharn Silpa-archa over a budget cut for the Royal Irrigation Department.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit chaired a video conference with provincial governors and related ministries in preparation for the government’s 1-year performance report.

The government will organize exhibitions publicizing the administration's works to the general public in addition to the Prime Minister’s weekly broadcast program. The issues will include the government’s water management projects.

Typhoon Kai-Tak makes landfall in China, brings heavy rain to Thailand

BANGKOK, Aug 17 - More rain has been forecast for Thailand’s north and northeast due to the impact of typhoon Kai-Tak which made a landfall over China's Hainan on Friday morning, according to the Meteorological Department.

Myanmar pledges to care for 92 Thai detainees, axe blacklist

BANGKOK, Aug 17 - Myanmar President Thein Sein pledged to take care of all 92 Thais being held for alleged land encroachment and possession of illegal arms and drugs and will delist the names of 13 Thai journalist and columnists from its blacklist imposed 11 years ago, the Thai defence minister said on Friday.

Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol broke the news after meeting with the Myanmar leader and discussing a wide range of issues during his two-day official visit at the invitation of his Myanmar counterpart to improve bilateral relations.

The minister told reporters after returning from Myanmar that he believed those being charged for drug possession would not face harsh punishment as the drug in their possession was marijuana, not heroin or methamphetamines.

Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol also said that the Myanmar authorities promised to revoke a blacklist with the names of 13 Thai journalists and columnists. Among them are Wassana Nanuam, a reporter for the English-language Bangkok Post, and Suthichai Yoon, a columnist and editor-in-chief of the Nation Multimedia Group. They had been banned from entering Myanmar for 11 years. (MCOT online news)

Thai women in Bahrain calls for rescue from forced prostitution: 191 police

BANGKOK: -- The spokesman of 191 emergency police said Friday that the division has received an urgent call from a Thai woman who claimed to be detained in Bahrain along with nine others to be forced to prostitution.

Pol Col Sanpisit Yaemkesorn said an operator of the 191 division received a phone call from a woman who said she was detained in a house opposite from the French embassy in Bahrain.

The woman said they would be forced into prostitution at the end of Ramadan and called for an emergency rescue.

Sanpisit said the 191 police checked and found that the woman had real identy so the 191 had contacted other government agencies concerned to stage a rescue operation.

Sanpisit said the 191 division received a phone call from the same woman, saying her group had not been rescued yet.

The woman expressed fear that the woman trafficking gang had an infiltrator in the Thai embassy in Bahrain and she feared that they would be moved elsewhere soon.

Tighter security to be carried out in the deep South

BANGKOK, 17 August 2012 (NNT)-Deputy Prime Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa has instructed security units in the southernmost provinces to frisk every vehicle that enters and leaves government buildings in an effort to prevent insurgent attacks.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the reinforcement on safety around government offices in the South is expedited following the explosion in the parking lot in front of Panarae Municipality building yesterday.

He suspected the incident was aimed to stir a sense of violence, but with no intention to cause loss of life or large scale damages during the holy month of Ramadan. Intensive vehicle search will be carried out, from now on, across the 3 provinces especially around official areas.

The Deputy Prime Minister elaborated that the vehicle used in the explosion yesterday was the same one used in a recent brutal attack on soldiers in Pattani. He added the truck had been stolen from Yala province. Officials in the restive South have already been told to keep their eyes on suspicious persons as well as vehicles.

PM launches a project of canal preservation volunteers

BANGKOK, 17 August 2012 (NNT) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra presided over a ceremony to launch a canal preservation project while outlining the government’s sustainable flood control measures.

The ceremony, held at Samwa canal, was attended by Deputy Finance Minister Tanusak Lekuthai, representatives from the private sector and community leaders.

At the event, the Prime Minister said last year’s flood crisis which wreaked havoc across the country cost several sectors over a hundred billion baht. This year, Ms Yingluck said that in order to tackle flood problems in upstream, middlestream and downstream provinces, sustainable flood prevention projects need to be urgently introduced.

She elaborated that the government has assigned the army to be in charge of canal-dredging and landscape improvement works, and the latter has completed the task mentioned on 277 canals as scheduled. The project is aimed at increasing the efficiency of water use and storage.

As part of today’s project, the Prime Minister witnessed the launch of volunteer-based water patrol unit and an oath-taking ceremony by the participating volunteers. Equipment used in canals' clean-up operations have been provided to community leaders and nearby residents for further use.

Foreign Minister set to visit Brazil and Chile

BANGKOK, 17 August 2012 (NNT) - Foreign Affairs Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul is scheduled to visit Brazil and Chile during August 17-20, at the invitation of his counterparts in both countries.

According to Deputy Director-General of the Information Department Sek Wannamethee, the visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between Thailand and Chile and Brazil. The Foreign Affairs minister is set to affirm Thailand’s position as a strategic gateway to ASEAN and a competitive and attractive investment destination.

Mr Sek elaborated that as Chile and Brazil are two of the emerging and growth-leading economies, the Thai government aims to further boost bilateral trade and investment cooperation with the two South American nations.

The visit also marks the 50th Anniversary of Thailand – Chile Diplomatic Relations. During his visit to Chile, Mr Surapong is due to pay courtesy calls on Chilean President Sebastián Piñera and to hold talks with Foreign Minister Alfredo Moreno.

High on the minister’s agenda at the meeting is Thailand’s plan to finalize the negotiation on a free trade agreement between Thailand and Chile. The negotiation is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Following the meeting, Mr Surapong will present Thai books and artefacts to the Diplomatic Academy of Chile for the use in its Thai study research. The Foreign Minister is also scheduled to plant a Cassia fistula, or Ratchaphruek, tree at Plaza Tailandia Park, where Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn had presided over its opening ceremony. A Thai Pavilion is set to be built in the park in commemoration of the anniversary.

Hat Yai locals welcome inaugural flight by Firefly Airline
