I seriously doubt that a bottle of domestic beer will rise in price BY 79 Baht per 660 ml (= a large bottle) when the current retail price stands at approximately 44 Baht (depending on brand), because that would mean you'd suddenly pay over 120 Baht for a bottle of local beer, and that simply is not going to happen.

Also, to the best of my knowledge, excise tax rates are calculated per 1 liter of 100% alcohol content, even for so-called 80% alcoholic beverages.

Bye bye Thailand, its been fun but over the last 2 years about the only that hasn't increased is my pay packet.....

They are making some good Wine and Voidka in Vietnam now, also the local drafts are not bad at all. About half the cost of living as is in Thailand, Vietnam is a good place to hang out.............

I think a few people are assuming the increases apply to the full measure of drinks however excise duties only apply to the alcohol content.

My liqor store warned me a week ago that prices will go up. My regular 1 liter Benmore wil go up about 20 Baht a bottle...maybe 30.

I doubt this - I think they mean 120 baht on 1 litre of PURE alcohol - so just adjust your calculations. They could never increase the price of beer by that amount in 1 go.

I thought most western countries increased the sin tax when they need extra funds & if it does get some people off smoking &/or drinking then healthcare savings are also made.

Well it wont reduce consumption of either. For the poor it will simply mean less money on the table for food for the children whilst Dad still smokes his tabs and drinks whiskey.

I'm teetotal (in smug mode). Alcohol and motorbikes don't really go well together. What bothers me is the outrageous price I have to pay for orange juice. It's twice the price in Thailand it is in the UK. And the UK doesn't even grow its own oranges!

(late addition) I'm off to France soon where I now have to carry a breathalyser in my car/motorbike even though I don't drink. And you think Thai laws are crazy?

Probably based on 100%, given the fact that most spirits don't have a content over 40% it will be not that high.

it didn't say "over" but under 80proof (40%) which means 40% is taxed higher which applies to most spirits.

Happy I decided to spend most of my times in Philippines, next trip. Taxes WERE already high on wine, could hardly find an affordable bottle. I do not care much for beer, but am always punished in Thailand for enjoying wine. Now it gets worse, I take my business elsewhere.

Everything is done to get money in the pocket, smiles have faded a long time, Landmarks have been ruined, beaches spoiled, the real-estate mafia has done its part of destroying the country, wiping their ass on environment.
