Home Buyers’ Expo 2012 held at Queen Sirikit Center

BANGKOK, 24 August 2012 (NNT) - Three grand-scale in-one housing exhibitions are being held at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center from August 23-26.

The Housing Finance Association, in conjunction with Home Buyers’ Guide Co., Ltd., is organizing the Home Buyers’ Expo 2012, Non Performing Asset (NPA) Grand Sale 2012, and Home Loan 2012, at the Queen Sirikit Convention Center from now on until this Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The organizers are expecting around 80,000 visitors at the event. The Housing Finance Association has anticipated more housing loan requests than last year’s, which saw 270 billion baht worth of total home loans. It said the first-home tax deduction scheme helps stimulate home buying and the purchasing power has increased throughout the year.

According to Housing Business Association President Issara Boonyangs, many prospective buyers hesitated to purchase a house earlier in the year; however, the housing business is expected to grow in the fourth quarter. He advised people to buy their houses this year before prices of single homes and condominiums go up by 3-5% and 10% respectively next year, as a result of the minimum wage hike and construction material price increase

Poll: Govt barely passes one-year performance evaluation

BANGKOK, 24 August 2012 (NNT) – The University of Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has revealed that Thai people gave the government a marginal pass mark for its one-year performance.

The university conducted a survey on 1,200 participants across the country on the government’s first year performance. UTCC's Center for Economic and Business Forecasting (CEBF) Director Dr Thanawat Polvichai said that the people gave 5.32 out of 10 points to the government on the one-year performance evaluation.

He said the respondents were satisfied with the government’s 16 policies but gave a barely pass mark for its success. Its political performance received a failing grade.

Dr Thanawat indicated that the people wanted the government to tackle the rising cost of living and improve the nation's education system as the priorities for next year. He added that one-third of the participants expected the GDP this year to grow by 5.6-6%.

NEW RULES

Ban on alcohol sales at govt offices comes info force today

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A new regulation prohibiting the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages on the premises of government offices and state enterprises, which came into force on Thursday, will possibly minimise overall drinking at a certain level, according to a health official.

Dr Samarn Footrakul, director of the Office of Alcoholic Beverage Control, said the regulation, which is an addition to the 2008 Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, clarifies the situation once and for all.

Prior to the addition of the regulation, it was unclear whether it was legal or not for government agencies and state enterprises to allow the sales and distribution of alcoholic drinks on their premises.

However, clubhouses on their premises are allowed to sell and distribute alcoholic drinks as usual.

The ban is extended to areas around the premises of government offices and state enterprises.

Dr Samarn said the ban might reduce the drinking volume to a small degree while traders will continue to intensify their marketing promotions to lure younger drinkers.

A survey found that the success rate of teenagers in buying alcoholic beverages is 98.7 per cent.

They can easily buy alcoholic drinks during daytime and at night at grocery stores, convenience stores and department stores, he said, adding that the imposed time limit for sales of alcoholic drinks has not been strictly enforced.

"It shows our weakness in enforcing the law including the age limit on buyers and time limit on traders," he concluded.

BORDER TRADE

Border passes in north considered

The Nation

30189007-01_big.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Representatives of Foreign Ministry and the third Army Region meet Friday in Chiang Rai province to discuss possibility of opening border passes in the province.

Foreign Minister Surapong Tohvichakchaikul said local residents told the ministry's Buakaew mobile team during a recent visit to the province recently that they were in need of more passes on the Thai-Myanmar border, as these would boost cross border trade and communications.

Local authorities in Chiang Rai wanted the passes to be opened at Pangtong in Fang district and Santondu in Mae Ai district.

He added that while local residents had said that border trades would increase if the passes were opened, the army argued that they would facilitate the smuggling of drugs in and out the country.

The ministry was told that Pangtong pass has been closed on and off for more than 10 years but drug problems in the area continued to increase. Putting the blame on the pass was thus not right.

The ministry will discuss the army about the possibility of open more Thai-Lao border passes on Saturday.
