A friend of mine has been having a rough time with her now ex-boyfriend. He just went back to his home country, NZ to get another visa to return to Thailand.

As soon as he left, my friend's 14 y.o. daughter told her that the boyfriend has been sexually abusing her for almost a year. This guy plans on returning to Thailand and their shared apartment to collect his things and live here again.

My friend believes that pressing charges here now and informing the embassy will cause the Thai government to blacklist him for any visa. The girl's father, also in NZ and travels here a bit, plans on informing the embassy as well.

I am wondering if anybody has dealt with the government about any similar issues. Knowing how quirky the system is, I am not sure if he will truly be blacklisted from returning. Also if he is blacklisted, I figure he won't be able to stand trial.

Makes me wonder how vulnerable foreign residents are to false allegations of this nature.

Thats the point right here.....How do you know the allegations are true....I think that your friend should confront this guy with the girl and some other people present as well....So far you have just the girls story....make sure that it is true before you take any further action...

If it is true then she can take whatever action she feels is required when the guy returns, then he can face Thai justice.

I would say contact the police, make a report & inform them of his intention to return to Thailand. That way it has been recorded in the proper way. I don't think the embassy would get involved in a civil case until the police were involved & wanted to arrest or had arrested him on his return & as for blacklisting him, until he was found guilty of something, they wouldn't have any rights to prevent him from travelling.

Tell your friend to go to the police & make a formal accusation, they take a very dim view of foreign peado's but they need to set the ball rolling officially.

All I can do is try and get feedback on the ways these laws have been enforced in the past. Beyond that, it's a family matter.

The mother really believes he will get turned away at the embassy and the airport and it's better that she does not get surprised if that does not happen.

Yes, I am generally concerned about false allegations and civil liberties (or lack therof.) But, that's a seperate concern. There is more to this story and it's too disgusting to post.

Personally, I think the guy has more to fear from an enraged father than anything Thai law could ever do.

Thats why I posted as I did....it is unusual to make a post like this and then bring up a concern about false allegations...

If they have positive proof....Report it to the Thai Police and they should take it from there....this means if they find that there is substance to the allegations, They will then inform the NZ authorities and he will be arrested....his passport would then be confiscated.

You said there was more to the story and without knowing what that is, it is hard to make an accurate assessment of the situation....You mentioned he is the already ex BF...There is no chance that this is the result of a bitter break up is it ???...It is not unheard of for allegations to be raised in these situations. I am not offering an excuse for the guy but with these sort of allegations they need to be 100% sure of what is being alleged before they do take any action.

No worries. While I want an outcome that protects my friend and her family in the short-term, I also have very mixed feelings if the law here works the way my friend thinks it does.

The relationship ended because of what happened to the daughter but I understand how you read it the way you did. Just trying to keep out too many details because the expat community is a small place sometimes and it involves the privacy of a minor.

As gburns57au suggests,please make sure it's 100% true.

Call the Embassy. There is a NZ police rep that works there.

don't hold your breath about being blacklisted.Let the cop sort things out first.

Just out of interest, why is this ###### going back to NZ for a visa? It's quicker and cheaper to go to Malayasia or Aussie.

Consular Officer

New Zealand Embassy

BANGKOK

Ph (02) 254 2530 EXT 21

Ask for Cameron Sinclair. He will be able to tell you who the cop is and the procedure to take.
