The Govt 'has' managed to push wages up, force small business closures, raise taxes, double (yes double) some food prices, skim more money by corruption and generally upset the country - and yep, the loyalists voted for them? Som num na.

There is a problem. If the government have done a good job without Thaksin in Thailand, then the conclusion will be drawn, let the status quo continue.

the government has failed of course in the main objective set for itself which was to bring Thaksin back.

The backstop objective is to spin the success of the government at least until the VIP event.

In the interim Yingluck will continue to sidestep each and every red loony tune initiative set in motion by Thaksin to force the pace and hold the initiative.

I will have to agree with you on the previous government not being very effective. But my whole point of view is like you said to be the government Abhist had to crawl into bed with some real low life's. Other wise it would have continued to be a Thaksin led Government.

People are either basically unaware of reality or choose to over look it. Have you ever heard any one other than your self and me say Abhist had to appease people who were in it only for them selves. The Democrats were really never given a chance to rule. Give them the majority of seats in the house and you would see a different government. One I believe to be a lot better than what we have now. And I am not denying there would still be corruption. But things would start to look better for the fellow who just exists from day to day. It is unfair to say look what the democrats did. They were not given a chance. No body knows what they would have done given a chance.

As far as corruption goes there are some big time winners sitting in the parliament and the cabinet. But I believe there is probably just as much down the line in the Bureaucratic system before it gets to the Ministers. And makes no difference who is in power those people should be weeded out.

Foreign policy: Not impressive despite claims

The foreign minister has spent the last year protecting his patron rather than dealing with pressing issues of regional and international import

Foreign Minister Surapong Tohvichakchaikul has the audacity to claim huge diplomatic achievements for Thailand with him at the helm. But if we examine his one-year record, it shows that the biggest achievement of his career has been to protect Thaksin Shinawatra from further embarrassment. He has done so very well, maintaining Thaksin as the de facto prime minister of Thailand, and helping him to travel unrestricted.

Other countries have no choice but to comply with Thai requests for issuing visas to Thaksin. After all, the felon is the big brother of incumbent Prime Minister Yingluck Shinwatra. Of course the government won the election with a massive majority, but it's intriguing that Surapong says it's not the Foreign Ministry's job to pursue Thaksin's case and bring him back to serve his two-year jail term. Surapong does what is personal, not what is in the national interest.

However, one year at the tiller of foreign policy is a mere blip. It is hard to judge any tangible success when so many schemes take years to bear fruit. Surapong tries to point out his achievements, yet he is the main problem, because Thaksin put him in his position to fulfill personal obligations. He has done so, so he should leave before more damage is done to Thailand's credibility.

To be fair, he has done well in administrating the ministry, attending especially to the welfare of ministry officials. Other than that, it is difficult to claim any success. He has seen ambassadors re-appointed from Thaksin's list of nominees.

Thailand's biggest failure is its Asean policy, in which Surapong has shown no competence at all.

He doesn't say much about Asean because he cannot. Other Asean members expect Thailand to play an active role in the ongoing disputes over islets in the resource-rich South China Sea. What they get is utter silence. Diplomats based here, especially those from Asean countries, have complained that Surapong has offered them no opportunity to meet.

Claims of improved ties with neighbouring countries are not manifest. Thai-Cambodian relations have not really improved in real terms, nor the implementation of the International Court of Justice's suggestions on the border dispute between the two countries. Indonesian observers continue to wait on the sidelines. Of course, border trade and other business continues as usual, regardless of this government.

The only change is that there is good rapport between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Prime Minister Yingluck. Hun Sen disliked her predecessor, Abhisit Vejjajiva, because the Democrat leader represents everything he is not. But we will find out whether this rapport means anything when the ICJ delivers a decision on Khao Praviharn in the first half of next year.

Thailand's relations with the major powers, especially the US, are not yet ideal. The government can safely say that ties with China have improved under its leadership because of old connections and the Pheu Thai Party's preference for China. But Thai-US ties are out of synch at the moment.

Still, the strategic importance of the two countries has been neglected because of continued government confusion on decisions regarding bilateral security and technical cooperation.

It is important to have someone who is passionate about protecting our national interests, not personal ones. Otherwise, Thai foreign policy will be the loser.

I think The Nations editorial staff need a little less bile in their coffee.

They seem to be pointing out that Thailand has improved ties with China and developed a good rapport at the highest level with Cambodia, a country who under the previous government we were nearly at war with. They seem to have forgotten Kasit's ineptitude such as the plane incident with Germany and the UNESCO show. As for accusing Surapong of not trying to bring Thaksin back to face justice, the previous lot hardly put any effort in and did not even get round to submitting a request to Interpol as required for a Intl Arrest Warrant.

Also interesting that they state that the current government won the election with a massive majority!

ICT declared free tablet PC-internet access promotion as major achievements

BANGKOK, 31 August 2012 (NNT) – The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has declared the free tablet PC distribution and the promotion of internet access as its major achievements.

During the one-year performance statement, ICT Minister Anudith Nakornthap declared the ministry’s integration of all IT systems of the government and distribution of free tablet PCs as two of its major achievements in the past year.

Anudith added that the nationwide promotion of internet access from 10 percent to 37 percent through the establishment of 30,000 free wifi services has been noted as another of the ICT Ministry’s outstanding performance.

He stated that the ministry is aiming to boost the free wifi service to 250,000 spots and to promote public access to internet to 80 percent by 2015 and to 95 percent by 2020.
