BANGKOK: -- The Water and Flood Management Committee (WFMC) will release data on the country's water situation later this week, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said yesterday in response to a query as to whether drought and flooding would wreak havoc this year.

Last year's flood crisis is still a haunting nightmare for many people. It killed hundreds, inundated seven industrial estates and displaced millions.

"We are developing water resources in areas likely to be hit by drought and are also erecting floodwalls in areas at risk," Yingluck said.

Meanwhile, flooding has already ravaged 10,000 rai of farmland in Uttaradit's Laplae district and left hundreds of families struggling. The Wat Phothong School in the district had to be closed.

Resident Renu Prathapthong said her home was still swamped and that the waters had washed away 20,000 fish from her breeding pond.

Another resident, Pratuang Kampeng, said she was worried that if the floods did not subside fast, the paddy saplings in her field would die. "That also means I will go broke," she lamented.

According to the Meteorological Department, abundant rain is likely with isolated heavy showers across the country over the next day or two as a monsoon trough lies across the North and upper Northeast.

Lampang's disasterpreventionandmitigation chief Sanlek Kamjai said he had already warned locals to watch out for possible flash floods.

"People living at the foot of mountains should be vigilant," he said. It was raining over about 70 per cent of the northern province yesterday.
