BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) yesterday announced that it would be installing emergency boxes at 112 dangerous locations in 22 districts to help people report crimes, emergencies or public annoyances round the clock. The law enforcers’ motorbikes would be equipped with a GPS to locate the problem area in time.

The boxes would be placed in 112 spots across the city including Khao San Road, Phra Sumen Road, Din Sor Road, Sam Sen train station, the BTS skywalk at Victory Monument and outside Emporium Shopping Mall.

The boxes, installed since August 21, have so far received 100 reports, an informed source said yesterday. The BMA has warned people to not push the emergency button unless there's a real emergency or they could face up to six months in jail or Bt1,000 in fine.

In related news, the BMA reported that crash cushions have been installed at 10 risky sites on elevated Ratchawipa and Borommoratchachononi roads, while the remaining eight sites will get their crash cushions in two weeks.

Could be a card reward scheme. The more incidents attended the higher the rewards.

Maybe have to swipe your Thai national ID card?

No doubt there will be a problem with nuisance calls, people just pressing the button for fun etc.

But to have to swipe a card to some extent defeats the urgency factor.

There will be cases where the purse / wallet of the caller has just been snatched, therefore no card to swipe, or the caller left their card at home. No card - bad luck, no help? Surely it cannot be like that.

The emergency call in / response should be able to function without a card.

What about tourists, can they use it? What card? And doesn't appear to be any English language on the box.

Swiping takes away any possibility of doing it anonymously. Not very helpful at all.

This is a good idea. Put in the emergency box, so the victen can alert the police, and the police can avoin that area because it is to dangerous for them.

I cannot see the writing on the box well enough to determine if there English instructions as well.

It appears that it is Thai. Perhaps my eyes are good enough or perhaps the picutre of the box is clear enough or possibily both.

Seems clear enough to me too davejones.

Symbols remove the need to read Thai script, multi lingual I suppose, and presumably there will be somebody available who has a command of English to handle calls from other than Thai speakers, and that's another issue entirely.

the card is obviously Micro-Chip (as there is no actual magnetic swipe).. its just an area. so it must be either Thai ID cards (to prevent miss-use), or maybe its for the police to do some admin to the box or something.

so,, as for foreigners, I guess we cant use it!

Just my two satangs worth, but wouldn't it be better to increase police patrols in those 112 locations which have been determined to be so dangerous? Sorry, just caught myself trying to use some common sense!
