BANGKOK: -- Last year's flood crisis has cost some 65,000 people their jobs and caused economic losses of about Bt1.425 trillion, a researcher told reporters yesterday.

Prof Paiboon Suriyawongpaisal from the Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI) said the losses were seven times higher than the 2011 state budget.

As per World Bank rankings, Thailand stands at No 4 among countries with highest economic losses due to natural disasters.

The professor went on to say that the crisis had affected more than 12 million people in 61 provinces.

In related news, the Social Security Office (SSO) is considering expanding the Workmen's Compensation Fund (WCF) to cover more businesses.

oh well I never received any helps from the government for my house being flooded for 6 weeks. So I am not concern in those figures.

I have a very reliable and well informed source at the ministry involved in the catastroph. And there is only one culprit who is responsible for the flood. And he don't belong tot PTP or the democrats even do his party is part of the coalition government.

Absurd to talk about "only one culprit" when the laws of Thailand regarding deforestation and building in national parks have been totally flouted by unscrupulous developers for many years. Many many levels of upper society share in the cause of that disaster.

And what is going to happen with all, who - because of their many years neglectance- were for a big part the cause of this catastrophy ( aside of nature )...

NOTHING.

What the Thais learnt of this flood, after the floods of 1995 and 1942... NOTHING.

So, nextt time accept your 20 - 50- 100 baht voters' money and continue with the same.

World Bank: 2011 flood world's 4th costliest disaster

BANGKOK, 4 September 2012 (NNT) – The Public Health Ministry has reported the damage caused by the 2011 flood, citing the World Bank ranked the devastating flood as the world’s 4th costliest disaster.

According to the Health System Research Institute, over 36 million rai of land was under water during the devastating flood in 2011. It said 12 million people were affected, 815 died, 5 million became homeless, and 650,000 lost their jobs. The flood caused the nation 1.425 trillion baht in economic loss.

The Institute cited World Bank’s ranking which said the flood was the 4th costliest disaster in history, following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, 1995 Kobe earthquake, and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Deputy Public Health Minister Dr Surawit Khonsomboon said natural disasters have a tendency to occur more often and people must be prepared and learn from the past disasters.

Dr Surawit said the Public Health Ministry has been adapting its strategies to reach out to the people. It has set up a call center 1667, and given people advice such as how to save people from electrical shocks during flood crisis.

According to the Statistical Office, 51% of the people in flooded areas did not know how to swim, and less than 20% of those who did could swim over 25 meters.

.......'crisis' implies unavoidable.....and thus, no one to blame........many would beg to differ.....

.....not to mention the 'aftermath' where a mountain of money was 'dished out' for 'solutions'....

They just didn't have enough boats pushing the water out to sea. Also I wonder of the customary 30% is figured into this 1.4 trillion Baht? That would only be 13.5 billion USD.

Just like Yingluck, zero success so far.

Well, what I miss here is anyone referring to Thailand being Number ONE in the World's Costliest Desaster made by Men. This deluge was not a natural inconvenience but if you keep the water dams shut until the end of the monsoon and then open full steam while you still get 1/3 of the rain (usually in the last quarter) then the result is this mess.

Did ever anyone wonder, where the 3 million tons of garbage was dumped? I just saw some fish and shrimps in the golf of Thailand with survival gear fleeing towards cleaner Cambodian waters.......
