Asia must make money, not trouble: Thai PM

NEW YORK, Sept 27, 2012 (AFP) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Wednesday that Asia's emerging economies can help the troubled global economy, but warned against allowing conflict in the seas around China from derailing development.

"The Asia Pacific region is a key engine of the global economy," she said in New York in a talk at the Asia Society.

However, the standoff between China and several neighbors over disputed islands must be resolved, she warned.

"We will not be successful in promoting economic development and prosperity if there are tensions," she said, adding Thailand was "determined to do what we can" to defuse the situation.

"We believe that maritime areas such as the South China Sea should be seen as an area of... potential."

China is in an increasingly terse dispute with Japan over ownership of islands in the East China Sea, while there are also disputes with Vietnam and other countries in the South China Sea.

Thailand's own economy took a hit after violent protests in 2010, but has settled down, Shinawatra said.

"After several years of the political unrest, Thailand is experiencing a much welcomed period of stability," she said, noting that GDP growth of between 5.5 and six percent was expected in 2012.

She also highlighted the opening up of Myanmar as a positive development for the region's economy.

"We are confident that this change will benefit the people of Myanmar, as well as the economy of the whole region."

Thailand & Ms Yingluk doesn't need to concern itself about conflicts between China & whoever

They have a few in house tensions to contend with before telling others to "put their house in order"

If Thailand looked a better prospect then China would be investing heavily here too, but now it seems to be skirting all around Thai borders & going into Myanmar, Laos,Cambodia & Vietnam

Thailand needs to do their own job imperfectly before they do every other country's job perfectly. Thailand needs to polish up their own footwork and let the results (money) take care of itself. Needless to detail all the countless areas where Thailand needs to brush up their act.

But China and other nations involved with the turmoil in the South China Sea are lacking a critical perspective to the issue that is unique to Yingluck...

Thai Prime Minister: ''Woman's Touch'' Needed in South China Sea Dispute

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Wednesday her government will "make every effort to help build trust and confidence" among parties in the South China Sea disputes. Shinawatra, speaking at Asia Society in New York, added that Thailand's role as ASEAN coordinator for China issues gives it a unique role to play in the region — as does her gender.

"Perhaps I can bring a bit of a woman's touch to addressing this conflict," she explained to the packed auditorium.

Shinawatra's wide-ranging talk was followed by a moderated discussion with Ambassador Eric John, who headed the United States Embassy in Thailand from 2007 to 2010.

Myanmar has been a client state of China for years, Laos and Cambodia not so long. No way will China ever be allowed into Vietnam there is bad blood there going back centuries. It was Moscow who financed the Vietnam War not China.

Holy stupidity

She should try solving the tensions at home before she tries to solve other world issues

Thai PM offers woman's touch to solve sea dispute

NEW YORK (AP) -- The broiling territorial disputes in the South China Sea are a diplomatic minefield, but Thailand's prime minister hopes to bring something new to the negotiating table: a woman's touch.

Yingluck Shinawatra told the Asia Society on Wednesday that as a non-claimant state on good terms with all the parties involved, Thailand wants to help.

Yingluck was a political novice before winning election as Thailand's first female prime minister last year.

Don't be so hasty to judge the good PM. She means well and she has an ace in the hole. She can sent K. Jutaporn to be the defuser of this tense situation. After all he has a lot of experience on the stage convincing people to follow his message. And they did!

Pathetic! There's a major conflict here in the south that should be more important to her than a few disputed, foreign rocks.

Than again, that part of Thailand's land may not generate enough cash for her and her cronies, and no-one wears red down there. The latter explains why there is no Truth and Reconciliation Report into Tak Bei and Krue Sae.

More died in those 2 days than in all the red shirt mayhem, but her brother was calling the shots so nothing wrong could possibly have happened.

Clean up your own back yard first. Glass houses, etc.

cheesy.gifcheesy.gifDear Yingluck, you have your own citizens of Thailand divided in a blood bath of violence. Why not worry about your own people first before you worry about other countries…

Ditto.

At home, Yingluck can accomplish both. Soak the tourist and the expats then make it near impossible for the expats to stay here without a boatload of money. Money....money.. someone mention money? sniff sniff sniff That's Yinkluck sniffing out more ways to fleece foreigners.

The Chinese investments in Myanamar are all related to resources: Energy sources, timber and mining. Thailand does not have these resources available for export.

Laos investments are associated with securing what is a defacto serf state and Cambodia investments are a hedge against the Chinese nemesis of Vietnam which is closely linked to Russia and slowly creeping towards the west with its rapprochement with the USA which is investing through the backdoor via Canada.

The reality is that there is now a period of stability in Thailand. The Yingluck administration has provided a calming influence. Sure there are ongoing disputes, but the situation is much better than it was 2 years ago or 5 years ago,
