Without extending my tv with the 30 day option, do i have to do a border hop or can it be done at my nearest thai imigration office is there any cost involved.

To get the 30 day extension you go to the local immigration office and pay 1900 baht. To activate the 2nd entry you must do a border run and exit Thailand, enter/exit another country and reenter Thailand before the "must enter before" date on your visa. You will have to purchase a visa to enter the other country at the border, Myanmar 500 baht, Cambodia $20, Laos depends on your nationality (around $35) and Malaysia is free, so add that to the cost of the trip to the border.

Before the 5. that is the 4., to me!

Immigration nowadays will allow entry on the 5th also. Although it is best to go a day or so early, in case of unforseen circumstances. You nevr know when the car brakes down, you get sick etc.
