Hi y'all.

I'm proposing to travel to Laos for a brief holiday (maybe a week). Do I need a re-entry visa? If so I have a problem because my passport expired after I renewd my retirement visa and it will be at the embassy spanning the dates for the trip to Laos.

I have an unused passport from another country, can I use that in any way?

No you can not use another passport and yes you need your passport and if on an extension of stay you need a re-entry permit to keep it. Any border entry into Laos will require exit stamp in your current (permitted to stay in Thailand) passport as well as entry stamp in the same passport. I hope you did not really mean your passport has expired as that would mean your extension/stay has also expired and your are here illegally on overstay. Suspect you mean it expires in the future?
