Does anyone know how I can contact a Thailand office? I've Googled and searched United's website, the phone number (6623533939) does not work.

I bought a round-trip ticket, used the first half to get here, but don't want to go back yet. I would like to bump my return back until next year without having to pay so much in fees I might as well buy another round-trip ticket. Possibly changing it to a family member coming to see me or banking credit for a later flight would be nice. Really, I would like to know what my options are. However, I cannot find find a way to contact someone on this side of the earth. My sister called an office in America but was treated poorly. If I have to endure poor customer service, I prefer to deal with someone in my time zone.

Any ideas, suggestions, or general help?

From where are you trying to phone them ?

If in Thailand the phone number would be 02.353.39.39.

Having said that, I think you have little chance in getting a result, unless you have a full fare ticket which might be partially refundable.

Good luck

There used to be a CTO in Bangkok, but I confess I haven't been in a few years:

Address: 393 อาคารธนาคารทหารไทยสีลม ชั้น6 สีลมซอย7 สีลม บางรัก กรุงเทพมหานคร 10500, 393 TMB Bldg. 6FL. Silom Soi7, Bangrak, Bangkok 10500 Thailand

Phone: 02-3533900

Hours:

Mon-Fri 8am–5pm

Sat-Sun Closed

Transit: BTS Chong Nonsi Station

Or you may have to go to the airport, Suvarnabhumi.

You should be able to have the ticket re-issued changing your return date, but perhaps only out to 366 days from the date when the ticket was first issued?, for a fee - which is typically $150 (USD) - but the terms and conditions are quite detailed. Note that you have already used a portion of your ticket.

American flag carriers are horrible (sadly) and as Yermanee has said, unless you have a full fare ticket it is doubtful they will let you rebook for free or even a decent small fee. It actually might be cheaper to just book a new flight on a new carrier.

This is of course incorrect. As I said, the ticket can probably be re-issued, changing the return date, for a $150 fee. Obviously a new one-way ticket might be closer to $1,000.

AFTER DEPARTURE

CHARGE USD 150.00 FOR REISSUE.

WAIVED FOR SCHEDULE CHANGE.

These terms and conditions are clearly spelled out when one purchases a ticket, so should hardly come as a surprise.

Didn't realize you worked for United .... I will stick by my remarks that American flag carriers are notorious for finding ways not to change tickets without a large fee (regardless of the printed terms and conditions ) and in my experience (since I travel for a living) and the few times I have been stuck flying an American carrier and have had date changes I have found it cheaper to simply rebook unless I was on full fare and in the front of the plane (which is why I will now only fly EK internationally who seems more willing to makes changes free of charge).

United'c CTO is located at the airport, the sales office downtown will not be able to assist you. Don't even attempt to go to the airport as the ticket office is only open certain hours around flight times, verify with reservations before you trek out. These days reservation departments are there to sell tickets, because you want to make changes or refund the ticket front line tele-sales staff wont be able to answer options on the spot, (that's what your sister ran into sadly) they will mark your comments and send your PNR to their rate desk to price out changes/refunds this process can take 4-12 hours. The numbers provided above you'll have to follow the same steps & wait.

Couple of points,

A-You say bump it to next year, your ticket will only have a total period of validity of ONE year from your time of purchase, meaning if you bought it April 1, flew August 1st and now want to change it to April 5th wont work. This is a general rule it really depends on the fare type, sometime J/F class can be re-issued and carried over but not lower yield tickets.

B-Name changes are never permitted you cannot transfer the ticket to anyone else, those days are long gone

C-Banking it to your credit card if you decide to refund will take 6-8 weeks

D-Change fees are one issue there would also be a service charge on top of any fees.

1-Did you buy your ticket from united.com ? if so there is no need to visit UA they prefer the refund process be made online

Change tickets https://www.united.com/web/en-US/apps/reservation/default.aspx

Refund Tickets https://www.united.com/web/en-us/content/reservations/refunds/refund.aspx

2-If you purchased your ticket from a travel agency and want a refund you MUST contact the travel agency, in some cases even to make a flight change.

Depending on the type of ticket you purchased read the fine print and look for Change Fees (After Departure) then Refund (After Departure)

Finally a complete refund will be calculated like this, if you paid $1000 for a round trip ticket and now want a refund, UA will calculate a normal one way fare at the time you FLEW not your date of return so if the one way fare is $900 you would be refunded $100 less the $50 service fee leaving you with a whopping $50.

Finally if you are going to make the change and flights are NOT available say in V/Q inventory and they want you to upgrade your fare type for an extra fee to H class, WAIT UNTIL you make any call or online until after midnight Chicago time, reason being all of the seats that are not ticketed by travel agents are dumped back into inventory when they auto cancel at midnight NYC time, ORD time, SFO time.

I've been flying BKK->LAS on UA/CO quite often the past few years as they've been offering the best connections/prices. I bought 2 discount tickets last January for use in April. We decided to reschedule that trip, along with a one way bought for my mother, to November. I made the initial reservations on UA's website.

From Thailand, I called UA in the US via Skype. I'm actually amazed at how easy it was to reschedule. Luckily, prices dropped a bit and I actually almost broke even, even after paying the $150 change fee. The process was very simple and the guy who helped me was fantastic. It did take about 20 or more minutes to complete as the agent had to go off and check the new fares, etc.

This was a complicated process as I had to have all the seats together all the way through, and have wheelchair service also.

I then called up a month ago and added a dog to the mix. No problems. Great help from UA, both from the agent who helped me as well as their special department that does animals in cargo.

Yesterday I called about getting an expensive guitar on board. The lady walked me through the different options and was very nice. Spent about 15 minutes on the phone with her.

Through all this, never had a problem with an agent. Quite the contrary, they were fantastic! I am a bit amazed at how easy it's all been.

Now if they can only get better looking attendants!! whistling.gif

I haven't used the BKK office in many years, but back then did a number of ticket changes at this office. Seems it's still there??? From the UA website:

thank you for your information and suggestions!

If I was unclear, I am in Thailand now (Chiang Mai). I bought a round-trip ticket, using the first half to get here. I'm wanting to reschedule my return. When my sister tried handling it for me in the US, she was quoted the near-$1000, including the change fee.

I know it can be done because I have friends that have done it, although not with United.

Can you share any details re: your ticket? Price, fare basis? Original flight, routing dates, return? When do you want to change it to?

You would preserve the most value by re-scheduling your return.

There are some things working against you: subsequent fare increases, changes in fuel surcharges, seasonal variations in fare buckets (low, shoulder, high, peak) , and even day of week.

Essentially you need to find flights within your original fare basis - I'm guessing it might be "W", or a lower one. Anyone can see fare buckets on ual.com, but this requires registration for expert mode.

As mentioned above I would mess around with the "Manage my Reservation" page, referenced previously in this thread.

http://www.united.com/web/en-US/apps/reservation/default.aspx

Try changing the return, try different days/dates until you minimize your out of pocket costs. There are SKLT fares for BKK-USA so you might even get lucky with a lower fare which would off-set the $150 re-issuing fee. Look to travel Mon-Thu, avoid Thanksgiving - 1st week in Jan. (Peak). You'll have to be flexible and patient, and persevere. Drop me a PM if you want.

The CTO has moved, essentially across the street (Silom Road).

https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/Contact/reservations/asia.aspx?camp=virtual_expert

They can definitely help with a change.

29 October, BKK>Narita>San Francisco>Dallas. $9XX fare + $5XX fees = $15XX total. I bought the ticket in July, 2012. I would like to go to the States right after Songkran and come back early May, approximately 21 April - 11 May.

t seems my best bet is to cancel the flight and either take the partial refund as credit to a new flight or put it back on the credit card and book with someone else. Korean Air has good deals during that time and seems to be a more pleasant airline.

From past experience with United, if you bought a 3 month ticket, after 3 months it is worth nothing. Wish you luck. I avoid them as much as possible now. Unfortunate cos they have great routes.

This is of course incorrect. UA has some minimum stays, ~ 6 days on some/most/all int'l routes but typically no maximum stay, within 330 days, but you can't have an open ticket.

OK, now I am confused. If you now want to issue a BKK-DFW-BKK ticket that is a lot different than changing your return date.

I think you could probably change your return date from Oct. 29, 2012 to ~ April 21, 2013, perhaps by paying as little as the $150 ticket re-issuing fee. You would then have to sort out a new ticket for DFW-BKK(-???), ~ May 11, 2013 - ??/??/????

I do not believe any airlines would make it pleasant for you to change a USA-BKK-USA ticket into a BKK-USA-BKK ticket.

Whatever you do, do it quickly as your return date is a mere 7 days away. And whatever you do, do not take a refund in travel credits as this means you would still be dealing with UA.

Assuming it's feasible for you, it might be easiest, cheapest to take the flight back on Oct. 29, then turn around on a new ticket, from KE?

Sent from my Desire HD using Thaivisa Connect App

I was going to buy a separate ticket DFW>BKK, actually CNX. If it was near the same price as or less than buying another 2-way. Looks like it's not.

Sadly, that's not feasible. I'll be working then.

I don't mind losing the return ticket if I have to. It was a risk I was willing to take. A 2-way was cheaper than two 1-ways.

2. Change/Cancellation Fees: Most airlines charge a whopping $150 fee to make even the slightest change to tickets – which is sometimes more than the cost of the ticket itself! However, savvy travelers are sometimes able to avoid this a few different ways. First, if you need to change or cancel, be a bit of a risk taker and see if the airline makes a schedule change, which most airlines do. Even if the change is seemingly insignificant- only a couple minutes, it never hurts to call and ask for a refund. I once booked a flight 7 months out, and it had 5 schedule changes before the departure date. If you see your itinerary has changed, call up the airline and see if they will switch you to the flights you want, or if there are no options that work, then see if they will cancel and refund your fare. Most are willing to do so. Even if there aren’t change fees, sometimes you can still ask for a refund like I wrote about My Experience Getting Out of Delta Flight Change Fees, where you can go online and fill out a refund request form. I had no real reason for my refund, yet lo and behold they refunded my fare to my credit card with no fee. Southwest doesn’t charge any change fees, but they do charge the fare difference, so that’s another option to keep in mind.
