Bomb kills woman, injures 33 in Yala

Firefighters battle a blaze that gutted a row of shophouses in Yala

YALA: -- A motorcycle-bomb blast in downtown Yala yesterday morning killed one person and wounded 33 others, while causing five shophouses to catch fire, as well as other property damage.

Security officials said they believed two highly sought-after insurgents - Hassan Mousodi and Saudi Satapor - were behind yesterday's attack. The officials were compiling intelligence and further evidence to back up their claim.

Meanwhile, a monitoring centre said this year had been the worst for vehicular bomb attacks since violence flared in the deep South in 2004. The director of Deep South Watch, Asst Prof Srisomphob Jitphiromsri, said the number of general insurgent attacks was down, but the vehicular bombs had a more serious psychological impact on the local population.

He said the recent spike in insurgent violence was aimed at attracting the attention of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation meeting held last week in Djibouti. He did not elaborate.

Yesterday's attack, at around 7.30am, targeted a five-member team of military dog handlers travelling in a pickup truck, police said. The blast, likely detonated by mobile phone signals, also caused a car to catch fire, along with five nearby homes, and damaged two shops selling construction materials. The bomb was hidden in a motorcycle with a sidecar parked near the shops.

The body of the lone fatality, 49-year-old woman, was found slumped on a motorcycle parked nearby. Eyewitnesses told police she was struck by the soldiers' pickup, which was blown in her direction by the powerful blast. Ten of the wounded remain in hospital, while 23 others were allowed to go home after treatment.

The Army's chief in Yala, Major-General Prakan Chollayuth, conceded security measures were lax and vowed to improve them. A manhunt was later carried out after a blockade of both suspects' homes, but no trace of them was found.

Police said Hassan was an insurgent leader active in Muang Yala district with close ties to suspected bomb-maker Saudi. Video footage from security cameras showed a man riding a motorcycle with a sidecar around the area before parking it in front of one of the shops. This suspect was later picked up by a man on another motorcycle, later seen heading towards a railway line.

Owners of two shops called for help from officials but couldn't give an estimate of damage.

Separately, a security blockade was conducted in Narathiwat to look for four insurgent leaders reportedly in hiding with help of sympathetic locals, but turned up no suspects or other clues.

A police-soldier force surrounded a village of 80 homes in Ra-ngae district to seek Amran Ming, Abdulhakim Puteh, Tuansae Tuankueji, and Usni Badoh, in the hope of arresting men who were their subordinates.

Aceh has parallels to the current conflict in the Deep South in Thailand. Since Aceh archived "special territory" status from the Indonesian government their has been no ongoing conflict.

And they killed who. A woman. Was she military. Was any if the 33 injured military. How about the shop owners, were they and the shops all military. Making excuses for them puts you close to the same level.

If they wanted to target a military target, then hit it when it leaves the middle if a shopping district where women, children and innocent people are. Truth is, they like the collateral damage as it gets better head lines so just more bs.

Don't be ridiculous. How have I made an excuse for the dead and injured in this attack. I was quoting from the OP news report as to the suspected target

Since Obama's going to be asked to stop vote buying perhaps he could also be asked to help out in the South?whistling.gif

The cause is terrorism, the effect is loss of life ,property damage, fear and a neverending debate and speculation as to whether it is politicaly movited or sectarian. Every effort should be brought to bear to remove /negate such activity regardless of who or why. The Government and local administration are the ones who hold the responsibility for the rule of law and the last time I looked , shooting people and random bomb attacks were illegal.

I agree. Acts are illegal and focus should be on bringing them to justice. Didn't they fry to do that once before at Tak Bai and got nothing but criticized for hassling a bunch of innocent farmers . . . Who were in fact terrorist and gun suppliers.

The Tak Bai incident in 2004 was a typical example of why people have little faith in the authorities in Thailand. This was a joint police and military operation to gather over 1000 of the protesters and have them transfered to the local military base and it all went terribly wrong. This is an ongoing problem in this country where both the police and the military lack the most basic skills in the execution of their duties. This resulted in neither side having any realistic belief in the ability of the forces of law and order to act in accordance with any sort of structure or protocol. They simply make it up as they go along.

...ahm...there is a difference between "putting someone to justice" and "rounding up alleged terrorists and killing them".

One includes the word "justice"...the other is nothing more than a lynch- mob, sanctioned by political leaders.

Apples and oranges....Indo is muslim.....no comparison

...and if you are alluding that thailand should cede the south...dream on..

Some senior Thai politicians have spoken out for an autonomous or semi autonomous status for the Deep South provinces as way to bring cessation to the current conflict. To date this approach has been resisted by the Thai military.

The Thai government has paid compensation to families for some who have been murdered in extra judicial killings in their counter insurgency activities. Anyone know if it's been mentioned in the media if insurgents do so for civilians killed in their attacks for propagandist purposes?

You say gather protesters. Didn't they go their to gather terrorists who were committing atrocities and then running back to Tak Bai to hide out and hide weapons. Perhaps they should have just brought military in and treated situation as a war. These "innocent farmers" were slaughtering people including fellow soldiers, friends and family of the Thai military.

How does one effectively deal with terrorist that indiscriminately kill and hide out among women and children?

The real atrocities apparently occurred after the coup when army effectively tortured individuals considered to be terrorist suspects, but those of you with a hard on for Thaskin elect to focus on Tak Bai and classify the terrorists rounded up as innocent farmers and mere protesters.

If you say so...

But why this "political language" killing, maiming, thousands of innocent people, every days, all over the world being used mainly by muslims? By the way many of the victims being fellows Muslims. Little problem if not about religion why the last words of every political suicide bombers are nothing but Allah Akbar...or is it misinformation too?

Please do not tell me not all muslims are terrorist thank you I am aware.

I agree, have a look at the UK, it is rife. They can't get rid of ( deport) known, recorded, video proofed offenders. Madness now called

We are debating Thai Muslims & their have not been any suicide bombings in Thailand. Yes I agree the Shiite/Sunni tit for tat killings are crazy, but again it's not about religion but power and politics or the removal of Western forces. Recommend you research how power is structured among the Shiite/Sunni as well as tribal loyalties in Arab countries. A hint is Saddam Hussein coming from Tikrit.

BLASTS ON THE TRAIN

Rail services suspended after three volunteers killed

NARATHIWAT: -- One of Thailand's most violent train attacks erupted in Narathiwat's Rusoh district yesterday morning, with a bomb killing three security volunteers and injuring 14 other victims.

Rail services in the deep South are now suspended in the wake of the bombing, which clearly targeted security volunteers on the train.

Volunteer Thanakorn Khunkaew was killed at the scene inside a compartment used as rest area for security volunteers.

Two other volunteers, Suksawas Ruangnam and Prasarn Chatree, succumbed to their injuries later at a hospital. Two more volunteers were also injured and taken to hospital.

Of the 15 injured, only seven had been allowed to go home as of press time.

Tanyongmas Train Station chief Manop Muenpreecha said 14 daily trains to and from Sungai Kolok would be suspended until the derailed train carriages were removed, train tracks repaired, and security measures improved.

Explosives used in the attack weighed around 90 kilograms, according to officials. The blast left a hole as wide as two metres, and as deep as 1.5 metres.

"Railway officials are demoralised," Tanongsak Pongprasert, head of the State Railway of Thailand's southern office said yesterday.

The explosion hit Train 435 on the Yala - Sungai Kolok route.

Narathiwat's deputy police chief Colonel Banleu Choowate said an ongoing investigation suggested Rorpae-ing Useng, a suspected key insurgent, masterminded yesterday's train sabotage.

Rorpae-ing is wanted for many other security cases.

"We will nail down this suspect," Banleu said.

He said locals are reluctant to provide tip-offs to officials because Rorpae-ing is said to be quick at killing suspected informers without warning.

Tanongsak said he would have a meeting with security officials to discuss safety measures for trains.

Rail services in other parts of the South continued as usual yesterday but with beefed-up security.

Each train now has at least 10 security volunteers.

The train sabotage took place one day after a motorcycle bomb exploded in Yala's Muang district, killing one woman and injuring 33 victims.
