Nepalese ex-prince arrested again in Thailand

BANGKOK, Dec 6, 2012 (AFP) - Former Nepalese crown prince Paras Shah has been arrested for smashing property at a luxury apartment in Bangkok, police said Thursday, just a week after news emerged he had been bailed on drug charges.

Shah, who as crown prince was unpopular for his playboy lifestyle, is accused of destroying property at his rented apartment in central Bangkok in May, Bangkok police told AFP.

"The incident occurred during an argument with his Thai girlfriend. The property's owner estimated that 900,000 baht ($30,000) of damage was done," said local police superintendent Colonel Chumpol Pumpuang.

He said Shah, who denies the charges, had been bailed.

Shah was flown to the Thai capital for questioning on Wednesday after being seized in the tourist island of Phuket, where he was earlier arrested for drug possession.

He was detained along with a Thai woman on October 23 after the management of his condominium complained about his unruly behaviour.

Police found roughly three grams (0.1 ounces) of marijuana.

Shah denied the drug charge and was freed on bail. If convicted he faces a light sentence because marijuana possession for personal use is not considered a serious offence in Thailand.

Nepalese embassy staff confirmed Shah's latest arrest when contacted by AFP.

Shah became heir to the throne in 2001 after his cousin, former crown prince Dipendra, killed nine members of his family including the king and queen in a drink-and-drugs-fuelled rampage before apparently turning his gun on himself.

Nepal abolished its monarchy in 2008.

Allegations

Also as a junior Prince, Paras has been a subject of controversy in many events. In the later part of 2010, Paras has been actively interviewing with the media and apologizing in public for his any past deeds that could have hurt the public sentiments. He cited that he was young at that time and just like any other youngster, he may have made some mistakes in his life. He is also viewed as a heavy drinker.[2][11] The prince was accused of reckless driving."[2]

In August, 2000, Paras was alleged to have run over and killed Praveen Gurung, a popular singer. A petition campaign was initiated by the All Nepal National Free Students Union, the student wing of Communist Party of Nepal (UML), and was forwarded to the Royal Palace, calling for Paras to be punished. A police investigation ensued, but didn't find the petition claim worthy and was dismissed summarily.[2][12]

Recent Controversy

Recent controversy pro Paras Shah includes illegal possession of the pistol which he fired in the air at a Chitwan hotel on 11 December 2010 under the influence of alcohol.[13] He reportedly opened fire at Rubel Chaudhary alleging that his family members had conspired to abolish Nepal's monarchy and also attempted to defame Nepal and Nepalis during his confrontations with the prince. He was arrested 3 days later[14] for a court trial to be initiated on 19 December.[15][16] However, before the trial began both parties changed their statements agreeing that there were neither any firearms present nor did any firing occur during or after their conversation while drinking

I thought ANY drug offence was a serious matter in Thailand, or does it depend on who you are, as to what the punishment is ?

Under no circumstances should this excuse for a man be allowed to breed.

Too late I'm afraid - already has 3 back in the old country. No mention of a divorce on wikipedia.

Looks like he'll get a royal wrist slap - every farang I've heard of who has been busted for pot has been deported...

His family definitely have some outrageous history and i am in no way surprised to hear of this behavior, even his own don't want him anymore .....sad state of affairs for a former crown prince to be in .....but he will be offered little sympathy here now after a second brush with the law,he needs to find a new playground to fulfill his monarchist fantasies.

As the article says, small, for-personal-use-only amounts of marijuana is a minor offense.

The last piece bears quite a similarity with the case of the son of a local prominent politician who has an ear disorder. Spoiled brats think they can do what they like and get away with it, & too often do.

Therapy time, and maybe a non emotional girlfriend(non Thai)? He just smoked a joint and did a rock and rollers bend on property in lieu of smacking the girlfriends probably jealous behavior. Happens in the western world by our classic elite for years. Least he didn't drive a car in the pool!

Where does it say he smoked a joint before smashing the property? It's more likely he consumed alcohol, because the police confiscated his cannabis recently on a previous occasion. Ironically he would have been much less likely to cause property damage or violence if his cannabis had not been confiscated. People just want to sit back and chill when stoned. He may have been consuming cannabis therapeutically as a mood stabilizer.

This brat needs a clip around his ear. Chances are he trashed the place he was renting in Bangkok then did a runner to Spew-Ket and the amount owing came tot he attention of $$$ authorities. 1 Million baht damage is some serous coin, probably really only 100,000B but there are commission's to pay and a corruption index to make slide further.
