Toyota Camry 2012 Performs Poorly On Us Crash Tests

Featured Replies

From the mentioned article 'The Institute still gives both the Prius v and Camry its Top Safety Pick designation but not the Top Safety Pick Plus award.'

I'm not a Toyota fan, but it is all in all not as bad as the headline of the article indicates.

Yeah..if you check the IIHS website you can see that certain cars score poorly, but still get a safety award. No worries :)

The headline probably should be Camry scores poorly on one new US Crash test.

The IIHS web site gives the 2012-13 Camry its "Top Safety Pick" award which is a bit of a misnomer. IIHS describe the award: To earn Top Safety Pick vehicles must receive good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, rollover and rear tests, regardless of their rating in the small overlap front test.

In other words this rating ignores the new small overlap test. Maybe this rating should be called Almost Top Safety Pick. There is the TSP+ award that includes the new test.

So the award is not much of a consolation for the Camry's poor performance in the small overlap test compared to its contemporaries. Toyota have some work to do to catch up.
