webfact Posted January 10, 2013 Share Posted January 10, 2013 Govt' to seriously tackle human trafficking to avoid severe damage By Digital Media BANGKOK, Jan 10 – The Thai government will accelerate its war against human trafficking in seven at-risk provinces nationwide in an attempt to remove Thailand from the US-imposed Tier 2 Watch List, according to the Social Development and Human Security Ministry. Vitat Tachaboon, Deputy Director General of the Social Development and Welfare Department, said the government has been fully aware of the human trafficking situation in Thailand and coordinated with related state agencies, the private sector and independent organisations to urgently solve the problem. Business operators in seven at-risk provinces including Samut Sakhon, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Rayong, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla and Sa Kaeo have been asked to cooperate, he said. Most of the operators are involved in fisheries, frozen food and processed food industries. Mr Vitat made an inspection trip to Samut Sakhon where hw was told that human trafficking victims were mainly migrant workers from neighbouring countries. The US Trafficking in Persons (TiP) report put Thailand on the Tier 2 Watch List for three consecutive years and the government is concerned that the country may slip into Tier 3 if no meaningful action is taken to deal with the human trafficking problem. A country in the Tier 2 Watch List is not yet compliant to the maximum standards to combat trafficking in persons and is in danger of falling to Tier 3, which is worse. He said Thailand’s listing in Tier 3 will not only tarnish the country’s reputation but also severely affect the nation in aspects such as receiving educational and military aid from the US. All they are concerned about is the sh*t label attached to the country being made bigger and more visible and therefore affecting business, tourism and aid. Did it ever cross their minds that they should accelerate the war against human trafficking because it's the right and humanitarian thing to do and not just to save face after being placed on the Watch List? Of course not. Otherwise they would have addressed this issue long ago. Expect to see a few low level traffickers arrested and taking part in a photo opportunity with many government officials surrounding them and claiming that the problem has been solved. When you think of the logic that everyone is scared that companies will close up shop and move to Cambodia due to the wage increases, since when would the answer anywhere in the world be "let's bring the Cambodian's here". They know exactly which companies are at it, they know where they are, they know which businesses they are in, expect a crackdown. Now this is serious. chainarong Posted January 10, 2013 Share Posted January 10, 2013 One can only assume that the Thai government has recieved a rather strong worded letter about this subject, otherwise we'd never heard about it, whether Thailand stay's at T2 or slips into T3 is a matter of concern , T2 means we can do what we are doing now , next to nothing ,T3 means a kick in the pants and so bad publicity begins, me thinks, they'll dance aroung Tango 2 and leave it at that. One of the most basic economic reasons goods & services are cheap is because of illegal labour. Look at USA , Latin America, Asia in general, India . Low earnings mean 'off the book' labour & opportunistic People Smugglers. Rayong and Chonburi are notorious for this and are on the list. But you are right I am sure all provinces that have a coast line should be on this list as well. Because they don't care and when they were challenged by the US for fear of losing funding they decided to do some thing about it. Unfortunatly for them the US is not going to buy their word on it they will want to see proof. Thailand is forc3d to take action.
