Help! - Forget How To Access My Own Website!

Recommended Posts

I have a couple of Websites which I have not used for some time but now need to access them to change some Contact info. etc.

I have the ftp ip Address, User Name and Password but have no idea what to do to get into the actual Website using - .............. what program, Microsoft Front Page? (any better suggestions?).

Can someone please lead me through the process from start to finish - well, at least to get into the Website to Edit information!

Many thanks.

1. Go to your hosts website and find the "log on" page.

2. Enter your user name and password to "log on" to the "cPanel" or "control panel". If you can't find that send them an email telling them your problem. smile.png

As an aside, remember to never ever use Arivex.com. They suck big huge donkey c@ck audibly! coffee1.gif

www.yourwebsite.com/cpanel - thats if you have cpanel

if using ftp, your going to have to know the root directory which is usually : public_html.....if its an add on domain, then probably: public_html/yourwebsite.com

if your ftp is timing out try toggling on 'passive mode'

If you use Godaddy, good luck..you'll need it.

if you forgot your server host, run a 'whois lookup'...the servers are usually identifiable by looking at the DNS

Your server company can help you, sometimes you can just submit a ticket and they'll hook you up.

So does Hawk Host...they had reoccurring unresolved DNS problems for half a year and told nobody unless confronted. Then tried to cover it up.

Pricks set me back half a year until i figured it out.

You have as much information as you need and do not need to contact your hoster.

Install and setup a free FTP programme (Filezilla, FTP Rush etc.). Create a connection using the FTP details you have. Connect. Locate the file you need to update and copy it to your hard drive.

Backup the original file before you start, just in case.

Install and setup some sort of simple WYSIWYG webpage design programme. There are many. DO NOT USE FRONTPAGE OR MS WORD which insert all sorts of bizarre code, unless these are what you originally created the pages with.

Open your file, make your modifications, save them and then upload the file to the server via FTP in the reverse procedure to what you used earlier.

Depending on who the hoster is, another option may be to login to your hosting control panel account directly (you use your billing login and password for this, not your FTP login), from where you may find that they have some sort of built-in browser-based page design tool which will probably be much easier to use than the editor/FTP option, at least for small changes.
