KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A powerful suicide attack targeted an Afghan intelligence office in the country's capital of Kabul, local authorities said Wednesday.

A total of six suicide bombers targeted Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security (NDS) located in Kabul's Shahr-e-Naw area, when the first bomber detonated an explosive-filled vehicle in front of the agency, as its entrance near the Sadarat Square.

Security personnel worked quickly and gunfire broke out for a number of minutes following the first blast. All of the suicide bombers were killed during the gunfight. Two car bombs were involved, but only the first detonated, which tried to enable the other attackers to enter the compound. The second vehicle was seized by security forces.

During the attack, however, an NDS agent was killed and at least 17 civilians were injured. NDS deputy spokesperson, Safiqullah Tahiri confirmed the number of victims during a press conference. However, Ministry of the Interior spokesman, Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui said 33 were injured, adding that the attack involved five bombers, not six, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility of the attack, adding that several intelligence agents were killed and wounded.
