AN IMAGE, taken from a camera seized from a group of nine suspected poachers in Kaeng Krachan National Park on November 10 last year, shows Pol Lt Col Theerayuth Katemangmee, right in red T-shirt, eating with colleagues at a reported hunting camp.

BANGKOK: -- Police yesterday asked authorities to revoke the permits for eight guns seized from nine men, including Pol Lt Colonel Theerayuth Katemangmee, |suspected of killing wildlife for food in Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi last November.

Pol General Jaramporn Suramanee, an assistant National Police chief, said each suspect would be prosecuted differently according to the charges laid against him, including gun possession, illegal hunting in a national park and trespassing in a national park.

Only one of the eight guns has been confirmed as having been used during the hunting trip after police found a bullet fired from it. Police yesterday also dug up a mouse deer carcass for further inspection.

Theerayuth, assigned to Prachuap Khiri Khan's Pranburi Police Station, was accused by park officials of illegal hunting along with the eight civilians.

They reportedly went into the park to hunt for wildlife on November 10 and the cameras seized from them contained pictures of the group, including the officer, at a hunting camp eating the meat of prey that was killed in the park.

However, on January 22, police indicted only the eight citizens. They claimed a "lack of clarity" in the officer's role in the illegal hunting trip stopped them from pursuing an indictment against Theerayuth, who now faces a probe for committing a severe disciplinary offence.

Thailand, where there is no shame when it comes to bailing out friends with money, or power.

Ok, so let me see if I understand correctly. This obese man pictured drinking alcohol with a man accused of serious crimes including poaching, is not charged while the man is charged. His police colleagues cite a lack of evidence to charge him although the same evidence is deemed sufficient to charge the others.

It appears to me as a searing demonstration of the disgusting depth of corruption in the Thai police force. What exactly does it take to charge a police officer in Thailand with a breach of duty and a criminal act? Why is this police commander partying with poachers?

What an incredible display of arrogance. Absolutely disgusting. Doesn't anybody in any of the political parties give a sh*t about the systemic corruption?

Yea, yea, I know. They don't.

It doesn't happen often, but it has happened before and no doubt it will happen again but GK i agree with you 100% . Bang on the money!

Strangely enough, not even the current PM who made a huge public declaration of her anti-corruption stance. Mere farce and another lie from a known perjurer.

Yes this is surreal, as I find myself agreeing with GK as well..... At this point the police are displaying contempt that is beyond belief.

Shooting animals in a park ??? Sheesshhh...... Every week I always say the police could not possibly lower the bar for absurd behavior, and yet each week they still do. Well, better shooting small animals instead of tourists I guess.....

They forgot "ingesting pixelated drinks in a national park".

Yeah I was curious about the pixelation myself...... No idea what Theerayuth's drinking buddy is doing. The buddy has his drink

in his left hand. I can only think in his right hand he was either flashing a gun, or flipping off the photographer. Strange.....

I never noticed this was GK but I also can't find anything to disagree with here.

I don't think it's any secret that I'm not a fan of the current government but if they could use this as a starting point for backing up their claims of 'no double standards' and the anti corruption drive they would certainly be making steps in the right direction.

The police here are, to a great extent, immune from prosecution. Public shaming in the media puts the brakes on their careers. This is about the most that can be achieved by external forces.

And, also in the news today, Kaeng Krajan seeks World Heritage Status. You couldn't make it up. Actually you could because everyone is playing their part according to the stereotype.

Petchburi provincial prosecutor has said he "lacked good evidence" to take the case to court. He only had 65 photos of the complete group of 9 inside the national park with exact GPS location and time, the police Lt-col was apprehended inside the park by DNP rangers making them credible witnesses and when arrested they had protected animals in their possession... All this evidence was provided by Chaiwat, the head of the Kaengkrachan national park to regional police AND the prosecutor.

This provincial prosecutor, a certain mr. Worawit, is the same man that let at first a police man walk after killing a tourist in Kanchanaburi a few years ago...

There wasn't enough evidence to go around, By the time they finnished charging the others the evidence was all used up and the poor bugger faces internal discipline, he will be promoted and moved to an inactive post for 2 weeks.

What we need is a political heavyweight to inform the prosecutor that there will be repercussions if he fails to carry out his duties. Allowing one person to escape charges because of his rank/status when he was clearly involved in a group activity is not acceptable.

True it is a chance to change their image but the one thing the PT is good at is blowing chances to rid Thailand of corruption. There specialty is setting up situations That can foster corruption.

The paper reporting the story pixelated the brand name of the whiskey. Free advertising. Orrrrr, Yes, go shoot up what's left of the country's fauna, but good God man, don't show yourselves drinking alcohol in a National Park, this has recently been deemed illegal. You really couldn't make this silly place up.
